| Abstract | 신라 오대산 신앙체계의 정립은 『삼국유사』는 보천에 의하고, 『오대산사적』에서는 성덕왕에 의한다고 하여 기록의 차이는 보이나, 이 신앙체계는 신라가 삼국을 통일하고 국가 수호와 국내 안정에 힘쓰던 중대의 불교신앙을 잘 보여주고 있다. 오대산신앙 성립의 인연들과 체계 성립은『삼국유사』와『오대산사적』에 기록되어 있으며, 이 기록들 속에서 신라에 수용된 밀교의 영향과 토속화된 불교신앙을 찾아볼 수 있다. 신라에 수용된 밀교의 다라니신앙과 불보살들을 모두 하나의 체계 안에 융섭시킨 만다라적 구조는 오대산 신앙체계를 세우는 데에 영향을 준다. 오대산의 문수도량적 성산으로서의 가치 부여, 화엄문수신앙 중심의 금강계만 다라적 구조, 오방불과 오방색의 내용과 오방 배치, 등장 보살의 의미 등이 현세이익적 측면에서 밀교성을 보였다. 이러한 초기밀교적 성격은 신라에 밀교를 전한 밀교승의 활동 성격으로 소급된다. 이들은 초기밀교경전에 기반한 주술로써 치병, 호국, 왕실 안위를 주 목적으로 하였다. 초기밀교경전에서 주술로써 중생의 이익 추구를 꾀하는 것과 신라의 밀교수용 목적과 부합된다. 이러한 현세이익적 특성은 중기밀교경전이 전래된 이후에도 변함없이 이어져 오대산 신앙체계에 반영된 것이다. 한편, 중국오대산신앙과 비교할 때 오방불, 오방색의 구성 차이와 독경과 예참을 강조하고, 결사와 복전을 체계 내에 포함시킨 실천공동체 조성과 유지에서 신라적 특징을 찾아볼 수 있었다. 오대산 신앙체계 중에서 특히 오방불 구조는 초기밀교경전에 사방불에서 오방불로 변화된 것의 기록에서 밀교의 영향을 찾을 수 있지만, 면밀히 살펴보면 5방에 5불 배치의 내용과 구성에서 오히려 오행설에서 파생된 오방신앙의 반영으로 보인다. 또한 법회 의례인 점찰예참을 수행화한 것과 토속화된 불교신앙을 모두 체계 내에 아우른 것에서 밀교를 수용하여 신라만의 독자적인 오대산신앙체계를 완성하였음을 알 수 있었다.
The esoteric scriptures in Samgukyusa and activities of esoteric monks were basically sorcery based on the early esoteric scriptures. aiming for curing disease, guarding the nation, and securing the royal family. Pursuing people’s benefits with sorcery in the early esoteric scriptures answered the purpose of Shilla’s acceptance of esoteric buddhism. This feature of wishing for benefits of present life had continued on after the transmission of the mid esoteric scriptures and was reflected in the Odaesan belief system. The dharani worship and mandala structure embracing all buddhas and bodhisattvas into one system of esoteric buddhism were accepted in Silla and influenced the establishment of the Odaesan belief system. The esoteric influence can be seen in the valuing of Odaesan as holy mountain of Mañjuśri temple, Vajradhatu Mandala structure centered around the Mañjuśri Huayan faith, interpretation and placement of the five directional buddhas and five cardinal colors, and the meaning of featuring bodhisattvas, etc. On the other hand, in comparison to the Chinese Odaesan faith, what distinguishes Silla buddhism lies in the different composition of the five directional buddhas and five cardinal colors along with the emphasis of reciting scriptures and worshiprepentance, and sustenance of religious belief community subsuming practice of “religious society” (結社) and “field of good fortune” (福田) into the system. Out of the Odaesan belief system, especially the five directional buddha structure placement of five buddhas in the fivecan be interpreted as an influence of the early esoteric scriptures, which is the change from four directional buddhas to five directional. However, structure and content in the directions is rather the reflection of the obang faith, spun off from the theory of five elements (五行). Furthermore, we can see Silla buddhism completed its own Odaesan belief system from the fact that a mass ritual, Jeomchal worship-repentance (占察禮懺), was put in practice and localized buddhist worships were absorbed into the system. |
