| Abstract | 일반적으로 개산대재는 ‘사찰의 창건을 기념하며 그 의미를 되새기고 개산조사(開山祖師)의 사상과 가르침을 계승하기 위해 개최하는 법회’로 정의된다. 통도사 개산대재를 문자대로 정확히 말하자면 ‘통도사의 창건을 기념하여 개산조사께 공양을 올리는 법회’라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 개산대재가 개산조에게 공양을 올리는 단순한 행사로 끝나지는 않는다. 올렸던 다양한 공양들을 법회에 모인 모든 대중들이 함께 나누는 열린 잔치의 성격을 갖는다. 요즘 말로 바꾸면 개산은 그 절의 생일이고, 개산대재는 절의 생일에 여는 큰 잔치다. 통도사의 개산대재는 다양한 의례와 행사들이 연이은 복합축제(祝祭)의 성격을 띤 영축문화축제 중의 한 장으로 설치되고 진행되어 왔다. 합하여 말하자면 통도사의 개산대재는 매년 통도사 창건기념일에 올리는 재(齋)이자 여는 법회이며 벌이는 축제다. 이 논문의 목적은 통도사의 개산대재에 대한 역사를 일별하고, 그 성격과 의미를 분석하여 미래의 바람직한 지향(志向)의 모색에 대한 논구이다. 가능한 한 이 논문은 주어진 과제에 따라 개산대재로만 그 범위를 국한하려하나 불가피한 경우 영축문화축제와 함께 논할 수밖에 없겠다. 이 논문의 연구방법은 문헌연구, 현장경험, 인터뷰 등이다. 현재 널리 확산되고 있는 대부분의 개산대재는 당해(當該)사찰의 개산조사께 재를 올리는 불교의례이면서, 동시에 신도와 지역민이 함께 어울려 다양한 볼거리 놀거리를 즐기는 인기 있는 복합문화행사의 성격을 띠고 있다. 통도사 개산대재의 역사는 금강계단과 자비보탑이며, 그 의미는 지계수행과 자비의 실천이다. 통도사의 개산대재는 지계수행으로 자신의 사리(舍利)를 이루고, 그 수행의 결정체로 온 세상에 헌신함으로써 행복한 세상을 이루어가는, 이 두 가지 의미를 전체 행사의 한 중심에 놓고 전개해야 할 것이다. 나아가 전국의 유수한 사찰에서 진행되는 개산대재의 미래지향은 대략, 중앙집중 관리적 지속성과 기획성, 국민참여의 열린 잔치, 1개월 이상 장기축제, 개산의 연유와 개산조의 이념을 살리는 고유성과 창의성, 한국불교의 대표문화 육성 등의 몇 가지로 압축할 수 있다. 개산대재는 1700여년 한국불교사 전체를 담아 낼 수 있는 문화축제가 될수 있다. 개산대재는 학술, 예술, 전법, 수행, 생활, 문화재 등 유형 · 무형의 모든 문화를 재현하여 전승하는 큰 기회가 되어야 한다. 또한 미래의 새로운 불교문화를 창달할 수 있는 큰 마당이 되어야 한다. 젊은이들은 우리 전통문화의 의미는 물론 존재 자체마저 잊어가고, 경쟁종교는 의도적으로 불교문화를 파괴하고 있다. 각처의 개산대재들이 불교의 이러한 문화를 발굴, 해석, 재창조해 나아가야 한다. 개산대재는 근래에 새롭게 대두된 불교의 문화활동으로서 그 가능성과 의미가 결코 작지 않다.
In general, ‘gaesandaejae’ is defined as ‘a dharma meeting to commemorate the founding of a temple and to inherit the thoughts and teachings of the founding patriarch of the temple’. Literally speaking, birthday ceremony of the founding of Tongdosa temple is ‘a dharma meeting to dedicate offerings to the founding patriarch of it to commemorate the establishing of it’. However, it does not end with a simple ceremony of offering a sacrifice to the founding patriarch. It has the character of an open feast to share the various offerings that have been raised with all the people gathered at the dharma meeting. If you change it to the words these days, the founding of a temple is a birthday of the temple and a great dharma meeting to commemorate the founding of temple is a great feast for the temple's birthday. The great birthday dharma meeting of the Founding of Tongdosa temple has been set up and carried out as one of various ceremonies and events characterized by compound festivals in Tongdosa temple. Together, it is offering to buddhas, opening dharma meeting and having a feast. The purpose of this paper is to catch a glimpse of history of the gaesandaejae of Tongdosa temple and to analyze it's character and meaning, and to seek for the desirable future of it. As far as possible, although this paper aims to limit the scope of it only to the the great birthday dharma meeting of the Founding of Tongdosa temple, but inevitably, it will have to be discussed with all the Youngchuk(靈鷲) culture festival. The research methods of this paper will be literature research, field experiences, interviews. Currently, most of the great birthday dharma meeting of the Founding of temple is a Buddhist ritual that raises offerings to the founding patriarch of that temple and at the same time a compound culture festival enjoyed by the faithful and local residents. The history of The great birthday dharma meeting of the founding of Tongdosa temple is the diamond precepts platform and maitri-karuna sarira stupa, and they means observing of the precepts and practicing maitri-karuna. The great birthday dharma meeting of the Founding of Tongdosa temple should be performed to achieve our own sarira by observing of the precepts and dedicate for the world by maitri-karuna. These two practices have to be centered in it.
