What is mind? The mind in Mahayana is considered as a nature or essence of the whole of creation, but in Abhidharma buddhism which can be seen as the first development of the Buddhist philosophy have seen it just as a condition of human/ worldly existence, the subject of cognition or thought. Thus, it has been dealt not as ontological dimension, but as epistemological dimension. In this point of view, mind cannot be explained by itself. It can be explained only through the relationship with the other conditions that make recognitions or mental states possible. The outline of Sarvastivadins` theory of mind is proposed in Abhidharmakosabhasyam chapter Ⅱ The Indriyas 34th verse. : The names mind (citta), sprit (manas), and consciousness (vijnana) designate the same thing. The mind and its mental states “have a support”, “have an object”, “have an aspect”, and are “associated” in five ways. This thesis discussed how Sarvastivadins and Sautrantika understood the problems on the definition, a support (asraya), an object (alambana), an aspect (akara) of mind ect., and an association with mental states. |
