| Abstract | 본 연구는 한용운의 『불교대전(佛敎大典)』(1914)을 근대불교시기에 출현한 다른 불교성전들, 즉 헨리 스틸 올코트(Henry Steel Olcott)의 『불교교리문답(Buddhist Catechism)』(1881), 폴 카루스(Paul Carus)의 『붓다의 복음(The Gospel of Buddha)』(1894), 난조 분유(南條文雄)와 마에다 에운(前田慧雲)의 『불교성전(佛敎聖典)』(1905)과 비교함으로써 한용운의 『불교대전』의 특징과 의미를 찾아보고자 한다. 한용운의 『불교대전』은 넓게는 근대불교(Modern Buddhism)라는 불교의 범세계적 재편시기에 출현한 근대적 불교성전간행 흐름 속의 한 부분이며, 작게는 한국불교 근대화 시도의 한 업적으로 평가할 수 있다. 한용운의 『불교대전』은 난조분유와 마에다 에운의 『불교성전』으로부터 영향 받았을 가능성을 배제할 수는 없지만, 그 구체적인 형식과 내용에서 많은 차이가 있을 뿐만 아니라 독자적 가치를 지니고 있다. 『불교대전』은 한용운이 나름의 관점에서 한국의 상황에 맞게 불교의 내용을 재구성한 것이다. 네 개의 근대불교성전을 비교해 보면, 올코트의 『불교교리문답』과 카루스의 『붓다의 복음』에는 서구 근대불교학의 오리엔탈리즘적 성향이 반영되어 있으며, 불교를 이상주의적으로 해석하는 경향이 들어있다. 이들 책에는 역사적 붓다, 철학자 붓다, 인격적이고 도덕적인 교사로서의 부처상이 부각되고 있으며, 붓다의 기본 교리를 철학적, 과학적 차원에서 해명하는 것을 주요한 내용으로 구성하고 있다. 반면에 난죠 분유와 마에다 에운의 『불교성전』과 한용운의 『불교대전』은 불교교리에 대한 설명과 함께 불교의 사회.윤리적 덕목 또한 중요한 내용으로 포함되어 있다. 이러한 경향은 이들에게 불교의 사회적 효용성이 주요 관심사였음을 보여준다. 한용운의 경우는 더 나아가 불교의 윤리적 덕목이 ‘수신제가치국평천하’의 유가적 관점을 포용하는 방식으로 불교경전의 내용을 조직화하고 있다. 동양의 두 근대불교성전은 식민주의와 제국주의를 경험하면서 불교가 국가와 민족, 사회의 문제에 어떤 기여를 할 수 있는가를 고민했던 동양의 불교인들의 생각을 반영하고 있다. 이들 불교성전의 비교는 서구 근대불교와 동아시아 근대불교의 유사성과 차이점, 나아가 한국 근대불교의 성격을 밝히는 데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
This study aims to discover the characteristics and meaning of the Great Texts of Buddhism(佛敎大典, 1914) written by Yongun Han (1879-1944). Yongun Han is one of the great Buddhist thinkers of Modern Korea. He wrote a famous article, Treatise on the Reformation of Korean Buddhism(Choson Pulgyo Yusillon, 朝鮮佛敎維新論, 1913), and an important writing, the Great Texts of Buddhism. This study clarifies the structure of the text and uncovers the meaning of the Great Texts of Buddhism by comparing with Buddhist Catechism(1881) of Henry Steel Olcott, The Gospel of Buddha(1894) of Paul Carus, and the Holy Texts of Buddhism(佛敎聖典, 1905) of Bun`yu Nanjo(南條文雄) and Eun Maeda(前田慧雲). These modern Buddhist Bibles have appeared in the Modern Era to meet the needs of the time, that is, coming up with one concise and simple Buddhist canon. The Modern era expects to unify the diverse doctrines and practices of Buddhist sects in order to compete with the challenge of Christianity or to endure the hardship caused by the government`s policy or colonialism. The Great Texts of Buddhism by Yongun Han is a product of the flow of the modern Buddhist Bibles in the world as well as a unique accomplishment of modern Korean Buddhism. Han`s Bible is arranged and structured by the original idea of Han although his book is influenced by The Holy Texts of Buddhism. Buddhist Catechism and The Gospel of Buddha reflect the Orientalism of Western Buddhist Scholars. Han tries to search for nirvana within the mundane society where human beings belong, not the outside world where they do not reside. Accordingly, this book shows that Modern Buddhism of Han has pursued the well-being of the country, nation, and society of people belong. Han`s book is organized in a way that a Confucian aspect is included under the ethical dimension of Buddhism. This study helps us see the meaning and role of Buddhism in society by comparing the difference between the Western modern Buddhist Bibles and the Eastern ones. |
