| Abstract | 붓다는 80세에 입멸했다. 붓다의 열반은 불교사에서 중대한 사건으로써, 불타관과 열반관 성립의 단서가 되었다. 붓다의 입멸을 둘러싸고 파생된 문제들 가운데서도, ``붓다의 수명``은 간과할 수 없는 논제이다. 붓다의 수명에 대한 제 해석 은 붓다의 열반관과 불타관 성립, 『대승열반경』에 대한 연구에서 선행되어야 하는 과제이다. 본 주제에 관한 연구는 동국대학교 안양규의 『붓다의 열반에 관한 연구』를 제외하고는 국내·외에서 찾아보기 힘들다. 안양규는 초기불교의 『대반열반경』과 부파불교 논사들의 견해를 중심으로, 붓다의 수명을 포함한 붓다의 열반에 관한 체계적인 연구 성과를 이루었다. 그러나 붓다의 수명에 대한 대승불교의 논의는 본 논문에서 처음 제시될 것이다. 본 연구의 문제제기는 역사적인 붓다의 열반을 어떻게 이해할 것인가? 대승불교에서 『대승열반경』이 출현될 수밖에 없었던 이유는 무엇인가? 이다. 붓다의 수명이 80세였다는 역사적 사실을 근거로, 초기불교에서 붓다는 역사적인 관점에서 이해될 수밖에 없었다. 부파불교에서는 종전의 입장을 계승하는 부파가 있는가 하면, 붓다의 무량한 수명과 법신사상을 제기하는 부파가 생겨나기도 한다. 대승불교에 와서는 초역사적 관점에서 붓다와 깨달음은 동격으로서 여래의 법신상주 사상이 확립된다. 결론적으로, 붓다의 수명에 대한 견해가 초기불교·부파불교·대승불교 시대에 걸쳐 어떻게 변화하고 발전했는지를 비교할 수 있다. 역사적인 붓다·생신으로서의 붓다에 대한 견해에서 법신으로서의 붓다로 확립되어 가는 양상이 도출됨으로써, 불타관과 열반관의 발전사를 함께 이해할 수 있을 것이다.
Buddha``s Nirvana has been considered one of the greatest events in the history of Buddhism, thus making it an important clue to establishing the views of the Nirvana and the Buddha. Among many issues that arose from "the Buddha``s Nirvana, the Buddha``s life span has been a key issue that should not be overlooked. The reinterpretations of the Buddha``s life span are an important task that are a prerequisite for studies of the views of the Nirvana and the Buddha including Mahayana Mahaparinirvana Sutra. The main issue of this study is focused on How to understand the historical meanings of Buddha``s Nirvana? and What made possible the advent of Mahayana Mahaparinirvana Sutra in Mahayana Buddhism? In Early Buddhism, the Buddha had to be interpreted from the historical perspectives mainly based upon the 80-year life of the Buddha. In Abhidharma Buddhism, however, there existed some schools held on Early Buddhism, while some other schools emerged through the introduction of the Buddha``s Infinite life and the theories on Dharmakaya. And later on, in Mahayana brought the theory on "Dharmakaya, which regarded the Buddha and Enlightenment at the same level, beyond their historical interpretations. In conclusion, this study gives us an overview and comparison of how those Buddhist schools ranging from the Early Buddhim had been transformed up to Mahayana Buddhism in terms of interpretation of the Buddha``s life span. This study also explores the historical and doctrinal developments on the views of the Nirvana and the Buddha by interpreting how the historical and physical Buddha had been transformed into the Dharmakaya. |
