AbstractAt first glance, four flat bronze panels and an anthropomorphic wooden sculpture would seem to be unrelated in almost every way. The bronze panels, small enough to be held in the hands, are now dark green, so the pictures and text that cover them are difficult to see. In contrast, the sculpture is a charming, life-size image of a boy, whose color has mostly disappeared to reveal the woodgrain surface. By exploring the texts these objects concealed, we find that they were constructed only about a decade apart in the twelfth century and enshrined on the same mountain in northern Kyushu.
