| Abstract | 본 논문은 일본 근대 불교의 특징이 무엇이며, 문제점이 어디에 있었는지 를 근세와 비교하여 고찰한 것이다. 즉, 일본 근대 불교의 방식과 문제점이 무엇인가를 토대로 하여 오늘날 새로운 불교로 거듭날 수 있는 길을 주로 사상적인 측면에서 살펴본 것이다.
일본근대불교는표층과심층의불일치내지모순을갖고있다. 곧현실 적인 장식불교(葬式佛敎)와 불교의 이상으로서 마음에 중심을 둔 불교와의 균열이 나타나는 것이다. 이러한 균열을 봉합하기 위해 죽은 자[死者]에 대 한 살아있는 자의 의식에 대한 새로운 이해가 필요하다. 그것은 다름 아닌 사자에 대한 불교의례 즉 장식불교로서의 일본불교이다. 장식불교는 에도 막부 이래 뿌리 깊은 전통을 가지고 있는 것은 물론 메이지 초기 폐불훼석 을 극복할 수 있었던 중요한 민중의 전통적인 제도이다. 일본불교는 장식불 교, 다시말해죽은자에대한의례를통해민중과철저히결합되어있다. 따라서 전통적으로 중시되어 온 이러한 장식불교를 현대에 새롭게 되살리 는 것이야말로 일본 불교가 현대불교로 도약할 수 있는 중요한 하나의 발 판이 될 것이다.
This paper has contemplated character of Japanese buddhism and has pointed out problem in comparison modern times. That is to say, I have examined the way of renewal based on development and problem of modern buddhism in Japan.
Japanese buddhism have discordance or contradiction between surface layer and deep layer, modern times. One is realistic buddhism which had held a funeral service, the other is ideal buddhism which had focused practicing mind.
The funeral buddhism has deep-rooted tradition in Japan. Like so, this paper would find the way of renewal funeral buddhism present-day that had been traditionally important thing.
