| Abstract | 이 글은 이전의 불교와 또렷하게 대비되는 새로운 불교에 대한 모색 이다. 여기서는 새로운 불교를 ‘참여불교’라 이름하며, 오늘날 전통적인 불교의 많은 가치와 실천 수행들은 완전히 새로운 불교도들에 의해 수 용되고 있다는 점에 주목하였다. 비폭력, 관용, 인내, 열린 마음, 심적. 지적 개발을 명상수행과 철학적 탐구를 통해 참구하는 일, 탐.진.치 의 마음의 독에서 자유로워지고 고통을 구제하는 일에 참여하는 일들이 그것이다.
새로운 관점의 본질은 다음과 같이 정리할 수 있을 것이다.
1) 인간의양보할수없는가치를인정하는일이고어떤공동체의위 치와 성취에 상관없이 인간의 가치를 인정하는 일이다.
2) 선이나 악을 증장시킬 힘을 지니고 있으며, 완성시키거나 고통을 가져올 힘, 발전이나 퇴보를 가져올 힘을 지닌, 특히 문화적.정치적 제 도에 의해 형성된 경험의 사회적.집단적 성격의 인정이다.
3) 고통의 조직적 원인을 공표하고 세계 속에 사회적 발전을 증장시킬 집단적 행위의 필요성이다. 전통 불교에서도 주장되고 있는 개인의 양보할 수 없는 가치에도 불구하고 한 개인을 해방이나 구원의 유일한 “단위”로는볼수없다는것, 곧신적인혹은자연의힘의유일한주체 이거나 자기 개발의 일차적 수혜자로서의 단위는 복합적 역할과 관계 속에서 분리할 수 없다는 것이다. ‘한 개인’에 대한 개념이란 근대의 ‘변 화무쌍한 자아(Protean Sely)’를 포용하는 역할, 충직성, 정체성의 다양 성을 속이는 것이다.
이상과 같이 참여 불교의 본질에 대한 이러한 독법은 전통적인 불교 교설의 무아(無我, anatta)의 윤리적 차원과 다를 것이 없다고 하는 점 은 앞으로 논의의 대상이 될 것을 보인다.
I have chosen the title “Service Dharma” for my paper today, as another way of presenting a body of material which by now is well-known to practitioners and scholars of contemporary Buddhism. Here is how I defined the Engaged Buddhism.
The essence of the new outlook is a recognition of (1) the inalienable value of the human person, whatever his or her level of achievement or standing in the community, (2) the social and collective nature of experience, shaped in particular by cultural and political institutions that have the power to promote good or evil, fulfillment or suffering, progress or decline, and (3) the necessity of collective action to address the systemic causes of suffering and promote social advancement in the world. Despite the inalienable value of the person—which is affirmed in traditional Buddhism, of course—it is no longer possible to see the individual as the sole “unit” of liberation or salvation—a solitary subject of divine or natural forces, or the prime beneficiary of self-cultivation—separate from the complex of roles and relationships that make up his or her life-world. Indeed, the very notion of an “individual” belies the multiplicityof roles, loyalties, and identities that comprise the modern “proteanself.”(4)
Today, as never before, it is necessary to consider the effects of personal and social actions on others, particularly in the realms of speech and symbol manipulation in the Information Age, and in the policies, programs, and products of large and small institutions. “The others” affected by these actions must be understood not only as unit selves, but as significant collectivities: families, neighbors, workplace teams; social, ethnic, and economic groups; national and international populations; and, not least, biological species and ecosystems.(5)
While it might be argued that this reading of essence of Engaged Buddhism is nothing but the ethical dimension of the traditional Buddhist teaching of No-Self, i.e. a deeply interdependent, impermanent, and suffering nexus of phenomena, the five layered “bundles” of experience, if you will. |
