| Abstract | 이 논문의 목적은 디그나가(Dignāga, ca.480-540)의 Pramāṇasamuccaya(vṛtti) (이하 PS(V)) 1장 「현량장」 17~20게송과 자주에 나타난 니야야학파(Naiyāyika)의 지각 정의에 대한 비판을 검토하기 위함이다. 본 연구 자료는 2005년 오스트리아 비엔나학술원의 에른스트 슈타인켈너(E. Steinkellner)에 의해 새롭게 복원된 범본 (梵本)을 저본으로 하였다. 디그나가는 상대적으로 전반부에 속하는 PS(V) 1.1-12에서 자신 혹은 자파(自派)의 지각 정의(pratyakṣa-lakṣaṇa)--PS 3cd, “pratyakṣaṃ kalpanāpoḍhaṃ nāma jātyādiyojanā ||”(지각은 분별을 배제한 [직접인식이고, 분별이란] 명칭과 종류 등이 결합한 것이다.”)--를 설명하고, 최종적으로 PS 1.12 게송에서 인식수단과 결과, 그리고 작용은 서로 다르지 않다는 비별체설(非別體說; 유식의 ‘동시지각설’)을 내세운다. 이어지는 게송과 자주에서는 『논궤』(13~16게송) ⇨ 니야야학파(17~20게송) ⇨ 바이쉐시까학파(21~24게송) ⇨ 상키야학파(25~33게송) ⇨ 미망사학파(34~44게 송) 순으로 타 학파들의 지각 정의를 주도면밀하게 분석하고 비판을 가한다. 특히 그는 PS(V) 1.17-20에서 니야야학파의 『니야야수뜨라』(Nyāyasūtra, 이하 NS)-- NS 1.1.4, “indriyārthasannikarṣōtpannaṃ jñānam avyapadeśyam avyabhicāri vyavasāyātmakaṃ pratyakṣam ||(지각은 감관과 대상의 [직접] 접촉을 통해 발생한 인식이어서 ⑴ 표현 불가능하고 ⑵ 착오가 없으며 ⑶ 결정을 [그] 본성으로 한다.)”--에 나타난 지각 정의를 소개하고 이 세 가지 한정사들이 갖는 오류(doṣa)들을 통렬히 지적함으로써 그들의 지각 이론이 틀렸음을 입증한다. 본 연구는 디그나가가 비판의 대상으로 삼았던 니야야학파의 NS 1.1.4 내용을 중심으로 선행 검토하고, 이어서 범본 PS(V) 1.17-20에 나타난 디그나가의 비판을 집중적으로 살필 것이다.
This essay is a follow up investigation on Ernst Steinkellner’s newly restored Sanskrit text (2005) regarding the criticism of the theory of perception (pratyakṣa) of the Naiyāyika, which is referenced regularly in the first chapter of Dignāga’s (ca. 480-540) work, Pramāṇasamuccaya(vṛtti) (PS(V)) 1.17-20. In PS(V) 1.1-12, which belongs to the first of Dignāga’s definition of perception (pratyakṣa-lakṣaṇa), is as follows -- PS 3cd, “pratyakṣaṃ kalpanāpoḍhaṃ nāma jātyādiyojanā ||(Perception is a combination of [direct perception, excluding discernment] name and kind, etc.)”-- Dignāga’s conclusion contains the theory of non-separate which asserts that the means, results, and actions of cognition are not different from each other. What follows is Vādavidhi (kk. 13-16) ⇨ Nyāya School (kk. 17-20) ⇨ Vaiśeṣika School (kk. 21-24) ⇨ Sāṃkya School (kk. 25-33) ⇨ Mīmāṃsaka School (kk. 34-44). In PS(V) 1.17-20, the following passage from the Nyāya School’s Nyāyasūtra (NS) is of particular importance -- NS 1.1.4, “indriyārthasaṃnikarṣōtpannaṃ jñānam avyapadeśyam avyabhicāri vyavasāyātmakaṃ pratyakṣam ||(Awareness is recognition caused by direct contact between a sensory organ and an object. Thus, it is impossible to express, free of error, and naturally determined.)”-- This thesis will demonstrate that the perceptual theory expressed in this passage is incorrect. This will be shown by pointing out the contradiction (doṣa) that exists between these three propositions. Shortly after Dignāga’s death, Uddyotakāra (ca. 550-610) of the Nyāya school raised an objection to Dignāga’s criticism based on Nyāyavārttika. In addition, this rebuttal (uttarapakṣa) for this counterargument has led to careful logical developments by Dharmakīrti (ca. 600-660) and Jinendrabuddhi (ca. 725-785), etc., however that issue will not be dealt with here. Therefore, this thesis provides a preliminary review, which focuses on the contents of NS 1.1.4 of the Nyāya School, which was the object of Dignāga’s criticism. Following this is a review of Dignāga’s criticism as it appears in PS(V) 1.17-20.
