Abstract이 논문에서 필자는 『삼국유사』의 왕생설화를 분석하여 기존에 제기된 ‘현신왕생신앙설’을 비판하고, 나아가 신라정토신앙의 몇 가지 특징을 제시하였다. 첫째, 현신왕생신앙설은 재고가 불가피해 보인다. 왜냐하면 『삼국유사』의 왕생설화는모두 왕생자가 현신(現⾝)을 버렸다고 하고 있을뿐더러, 그 현신이 버려진 장소까지 특정하고 있다. 둘째, 신라정토신앙의 한 흐름으로서 관음신앙과 왕생신앙이 결합된 형태가 확인된다. 셋째, 신라정토신앙은 신라중심의 불국토관념과 연동된다는 점이다. 『삼국유사』의 왕생설화에서는 당시 현실의 장소를 극락왕생의 기서(奇瑞)와 연관된 영험한 장소로서 부각시키고 있다. 넷째, 신라정토신앙의 한 흐름으로서 집단 염불을 통한 왕생신앙이 인정된다. 아울러집단염불 왕생신앙의 정착과 전개에 있어서 불교신행 결사조직인 향도(⾹徒)의 역할이 컷을 것으로 추측된다. 다섯째, 신라의 염불왕생신앙은 신분을 초월하여 폭넓게 받아들여지고 있다는 점이다. 『삼국유사』의 왕생설화에 등장하는 인물들은 비천한 여종에서부터 귀족, 재가승려, 은둔승 등으로 다양하다.

This study criticizes the previously proposed theory of rebirth in Pure Land Buddhism (現⾝往⽣信仰說) and presents a few characteristics of the Pure Land faith (淨 ⼟信仰) of Silla based on an analysis of tales on rebirth in the Pure Land as found in Samguk Yusa. This thesis will consider several points as described below. First, the theory of rebirth in Pure Land needs to be reconsidered because all rebirths in Pure Land tales, according to the Samguk Yusa, indicate that those reborn in the Pure Land have abandoned their present bodies, even specifying where they have been abandoned. Second, a combination of the Avalokitesvara faith and the rebirth in Pure Land faith was found as a branch of the pure land faith of Silla. Third, Pure Land faith of Silla is interconnected with the Silla-oriented concept of Buddha-land. In the rebirth in Pure Land myths of the Samguk Yusa, a real place, one as miraculous as the places mentioned in fantasy books regarding rebirth in Buddhist paradise, is emphasized. Fourth, rebirth in Pure Land faith through collective Amitabha chanting is recognized as a branch of the Pure Land faith of Silla. It is also presumed that the role of Hyangdo (⾹徒), which is a Buddhist lay association for the practice of faith, played a huge role in the settlement and development of the rebirth in Pure Land through collective Amitabha chanting faith. Finally, rebirth in Pure Land through Amitabha chanting faith of Silla is accepted broadly regardless of class differences. In the rebirth in Pure Land myths of the Samguk Yusa, a variety of characters appear in these myths, from lowly slaves to noble people, as well as married priests, and hermit priests.
