| Abstract | 천태승 순암 의선은 고려 후기 대표적 명문가인 조인규의 아들로, 해방 전까지의한국불교사상 유일한 삼장법사였다. 그간 의선의 주변 인물에 대해서는 어느 정도 연구가 되었으나, 그가 어떤 공적과 배경으로 삼장법사가 되었고 또 황실 사원의 주지가 되었는지에 대해서는 구체적으로 알려진 바가 없었다. 그런데 논자는 최근 충선왕에 관한 선행 연구를 통해, 그에 대한 답을 일부나마 찾을 수 있었다. 충선왕은 원황실을 대표하는 지식인의 하나로, 유교와 불교에 두루 해박했다. 의선이 국내에서점차 이름을 날릴 무렵, 왕은 대도에서 무종과 인종을 옹립하였고, 그들에게 인재를추천하고 과거제 부활을 도우며 원 제국의 전성기를 견인하였다. 그뿐 아니라 충선왕은 여원 양국에 사찰을 창건하고 대장경을 기진하였으며, 성지순례, 행향 등의 다양한 불사(佛事)를 통해 원의 불교계를 주도하였다. 원대에는 석사라바와 석달익바, 고려의 의선 등 총 3명의 삼장법사가 있었다. 앞의두 토번승은 무종대에 삼장법사가 되었고 경수사에 주석하다가 인종대에 입적하였다. 그들의 삼장법사 피봉과 경수사 주석, 입적 전후의 상황 등도 충선왕과 관련이 있어보인다. 한편 원의 황제들은 계율을 중시하고 호국불교를 앞세우던 고려승에 대한 존경이 커서, 그들을 주요 사찰에 주석하게 하고 가르침을 청하였다고 한다. 의선은 충선왕이 유배에서 풀려난 태정제 통치기에 원으로 가서 활동하다가, 1332년에 『예념미타도량참법』을 중각‧유포한 공으로 삼장법사 법호를 받고 황실사찰 대천원연성사에서 20여 년을 주석하였다. 대천원연성사는 당시 황제의 부친이자 충선왕의 장인인명종의 신어전이 있는 곳이었다. 의선은 충선왕의 처남이면서 매우 뛰어난 승려였기에 충선왕에 의해 원 황실에 그 존재가 알려진 것으로 보인다. 이에 충선왕의 다양한불사와 함께 의선의 승속 배경을 살펴보고, 그가 황실 사찰의 주지를 맡고 삼장법사가 된 배경에 대해 고찰해 보았다.
Shùnān Yìxuán (順庵義旋, 1284?-1355), a monk of Tiāntáizōng, was a son of Jo Ingue (趙仁規), representative nobleman of the late Goryeo Dynasty. He was highly respected in Goryeo and Yuan Dynasty, and he is the only Buddhist monk to re- ceive the title of the tripiṭaka-ācārya in Korean Buddhist History. Although some research has been conducted on the surrounding characters such as Yìxuán's family. But there is no specific study on what contribution Yìxuán made to become a tripiṭaka-ācārya and how he became the chief monk of the imperial temple of the Yuan Dynasty Dàtiānyuányánshèngsì (⼤天源延聖寺). I believe that King Chungseon (忠宣王) played a big role in the process. By the time Yìxuán gradually became known in the Buddhist community of Goryeo, the King established a political power by supporting the two emperors in the capital of Yuan Dynasty, Dàdū (⼤都). Furthermore, King Chungseon worked as a representative intellectual among the imperial family of the Yuan Dynasty based on his broad knowledge of Confucianism and Buddhism. During Yuan Dynasty, there were a total of three Buddhist monks, two Tibetan monks (釋沙囉巴, 釋達益巴) and Yìxuán. King Chungseon not only achieved the re- vival of the test system (bureaucrat selection test) in the political aspect, but also founded temples in China and Goryeo, printed and distributed the Tripitaka Koreana, and performed various Buddhist services such as pilgrimage etc. Yìxuán engaged in many Buddhist activities in Dàdū since 1323, when King Chungseon was exiled in Tibet, and he became the chief monk of Dàtiānyuá- nyánshèngsì in 1332. He reissued and distributed Lǐniànmítuódàochǎngchànfǎ (『禮念彌陀道場懺法』) there and he also incorporated them into the Wàn xù zàng jīng (卍續藏經). This achievement seems to be the direct reason why he received the title of the tri- piṭaka-ācārya.
