AbstractThe term “pramāṇa (means of right knowledge)” is generally explained on the base of the assumed meaning of √mā, “to measure”. But the problematic feature of Vātsyāyana’s explanation on pramāṇa and Burrow’s persuasive arguments for “to measure” as the meaning of this verbal root demonstrate the serious need of critical reconsideration. Some further observations in the Carakasaṃhitā may strengthen this view. The generally unknown meaning of “pratykṣa”, “perceived object” which was recognised by Schmithausen for the first time in Yogācārabhūmi and Abhidharmasamuccaya makes better sense out of some passages from Carakasaṃhitā. Such observations speak against the oversimplified assumption of a linear development of debate tradition in ancient India represented by the transition from Carakasaṃhitā to Nyāyasūtra.
