AbstractThe Dochula Festival's use of Tantric-derived cham dance, in which major protective deities of Bhutan are evoked and celebrated, reflects the significance of both Tantric ritual and Tantric protective deities in the Second Doar War of 2003, the event which the Festival commemorates. This article discusses the Tantric religious background to the war and to the Bhutanese state, and shows how the Dochula dances act out and express core values of Bhutanese society.
