| Abstract | 진각국사 혜심에 대해서는 고려후기 불교개혁운동의 중심인 수선사 제2세로서 지눌을 계승한 측면과 동시에 무인정권과 유착되어 수선사의 개혁정신이 훼손되는 계기를 만든 인물로도 평가되고 있다. 특히 당시 무인집정 최우와의 긴밀한 관계가 수선사 변질의 원인으로 이야기되기도 한다. 이 글에서는 이를 확인하기 위해 혜심의 탑비 음기에 보이는 주요 후원자들의 성격에 대해 살펴보았다. 후원자의 대부분은 수선사 초기에 지눌을 후원하였던 국왕 신종(神宗) 및 재상 최선(崔詵)과 가까운 관계에 있는 사람들로 확인되었다. 따라서 이들은 무인집정 최우의 의도에 따라서 수선사를 지원한 것이 아니라 수선사 초기에 형성된 후원 관계의 연장선상에서 혜심과 수선사를 후원한 것으로 생각된다. 최우 또한 혜심 이전에 이미 수선사와 가까운 관계를 맺고 있었다. 혜심이 최우에게 보낸 편지에서도 둘의 관계는 권력자와 정치 승려의 관계가 아니라 수행의 지도자와 추종자, 혹은 수행 동료의 모습이 두드러지고 있다. 최우가 아들들을 수선사에 출가시킨 것도 수선사를 통제하기 위해서라기보다 신뢰할 수 있는 승려에게 아들들을 맡김으로써 장차 있을 수 있는 권력투쟁의 위험성을 예방하려는 측면이 강하였다고 생각된다. 실제 최우의 두 아들의 출가 시기나 그들이 사찰 주지가 되어 독립적으로 활동한 시기 등을 고려하면 적어도 혜심 생존 당시에는 이들이 함부로 행동하지는 못하였던 것으로 보인다. 최우의 아들로 혜심에게 출가했던 만전(=최항)은 혜심 사후 현재의 월남사 지역에 새로 사찰을 세워 거점으로 삼았고, 이후 환속하여 무인집정이 된 후에 혜심의 탑비를 이곳에 건립하여 스승을 현창하는 동시에 자신과 문도들의 위상을 높이려 하였다.
Rev.Hyeshim, the National Preceptor of Jingak, has been regarded as the faithful successor of Buddhist reformer Jinul, the founder of Suseon-sa society. But he has also been criticized to have perilled the Buddhist reformist movement by initiating close relations with the general-dictator Choe Woo. In this article we tried to check these contradictory opinions by examining his major monastic and lay disciples who were regarded as his major supporters. His major lay disciples have been found out to have close relations with either King Shinjong or his premier Choe Seon, both of whom had been the lay disciples of Jinul. So we can infer that their following and supporting Hyeshim had little to do with the good relations between Hyeshim and Choe Woo, but was the succession of the early sponsorship established during Jinul’s period. Even Choe Woo was influenced by his Grandfather- in-law, Choe Seon. He participated in the Suseon-sa society before Hyeshim became the leader of it, as the successor of Jinul. In Hyeshim’s letters to Choe Woo, we can find no hint of the relation between the ruler and his favorite monk. There are much of atmosphere between the spiritual instructor and the follower, or the religious colleagues. Choe Woo asked Hyeshim to tonsure his two sons to be the Buddhist monks of Suseon-sa society, not to control the society as thought by some scholars, but to prevent the power struggle between his bastard sons and son-in-law from noble family by entrusting the former to his confident and respectful monk. Choe Woo’s two sons have been notorious for corrupted monks, but their deviated deeds were made after Hyeshim’s death. They respected Hyeshim and followed his teaching at least during his lifetime. CHOE Hang, the younger of them, built Wolnam-sa as his base temple after Hyeshim’s death. He also erected Hyeshim’s stele at the temple when he return to the secular life to succeed his father. It was to admire his own teacher as well as to sanctify his priesthood.
