| Abstract | 본 논문은 빨리율의 ‘파승(破僧, saṃghabheda)’ 정의를 재검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 파승은 사사키 시즈카(佐々木閑)가 2000년에 『インド佛敎變移論 -なぜ佛敎は多樣化したのか』라는 저서를 출판하면서 인도불교교단사를 이해하는 주요한 키워드 중 하나로 자리 잡았다. 그 이전에도 파승 연구는 있었지만, 이 저서는 빨리율과 한역율, 아비다르마 논서, 그 외 빨리 역사서에 이르기까지 방대한 자료를 검토하며 파승의 의미를 밝힌 역작이다. 그는 이 책에서 원래 파법륜승(破法輪僧, cakrabheda)이었던 파승 정의가 아쇼까왕 시대에 어떤 사건으로 인해 파갈마승(破羯磨僧, karmabheda)으로 바뀌었다는, 일명 ‘파승정의변경설’을 제시한다. 여기서 짜끄라베다는 ‘불설(佛說)에 반하는 의견을 주장함으로써 동료를 모아 독자적인 승가를 만드는 것’이며, 까르마베다는 ‘동일한 계(界) 안에 있는 자가 함께 포살 등의 행사를 실행하지 않는 것’이다. 파승 정의가 까르마베다로 변경되면 교리가 달라도 포살 등의 갈마의식만 함께 하면 파승이 아닌 것이 된다. 사사키는 이러한 변화가 훗날 아함 ․ 니까야에는 없는 새로운 교의를 주장하는 대승불교를 발생시키는 환경을 조성하게 되었다고 주장한다.
사사키의 ‘파승정의변경설’에 대해서는 직간접적으로 의문을 제기하는 논문들이 있어 왔다. 특히 최근에 후지모토 아키라(藤本晃)는 연달아 사사키설 비판 논문을 발표하고 있으며, 사사키 역시 이에 반론을 제기하면서 양자간에 흥미로운 파승 논쟁이 이어지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 일본학계의 현황을 소개하고, 나아가 빨리율을 중심으로 파승 정의를 재검토하여 ‘파승정의변경설’에 의문을 제기한다. 결론을 말하자면, 빨리율과 그 주석에 보이는 파승 관련 기술은 사사키의 주장처럼 두 파승 정의가 각각 독립적으로 성립할 수 있는 독립된 개념이 아닌, 양자에 포함되는 행위가 더불어 이루어질 때 파승이 성립한다는 점을 일관성 있게 보여주고 있다고 생각된다. 즉, 사사키의 주장처럼 짜끄라베다와 까르마베다가 개별적으로 성립할 수 있는 파승이며, 나아가 아쇼까왕 시대에 짜끄라베다에서 까르마베다로 파승 정의가 변경했다고 볼 수 있는 근거를 빨리율에서는 찾아보기 어렵다. 이 점은 이미 후지모토도 지적하고 있지만, 본고에서는 「파승건도」의 내용을 보다 세심하게 분석하고, 또한 후지모토나 사사키가 다루지 않은 빨리율의 부수(附隨, Parivāra)와 주석 『사만따빠사디까(Samantapāsādikā)』 등에 보이는 파승 용례도 검토하며 이 점을 명확히 한다.
The purpose of this study is to reexamine the definition of saṃghabheda in the Vinayapiṭaka. Since Sasaki Shizuka佐々木閑 published his book Indo Bukkyō Hen-i ronインド佛敎變移論 in 2000, saṃghabheda has become one of the main keywords for understanding the history of Indian Buddhism. While saṃghabheda studies existed before the publication of this book, this book is the first to shed light on the meaning of saṃghabheda, examining a wide range of sources ranging from the Vinayapiṭaka and Chinese translations, the Abhidharma literature, to Pāli chronicles. In this book, he presents the theory that the definition of saṃghabheda has changed. Originally cakrabheda 破法輪僧, it was changed to karmabheda破羯磨僧 owing to some events in the time of King Aśoka. Here, cakrabheda is ‘to form a separate group by presenting different interpretations of the Buddha's teachings, and karmabheda is ‘the monks in a saṃgha split into two groups and separately conduct rituals like uposatha and karman.’ This change in the definition of saṃghabheda to karmabheda implies that even if the doctrines are different, as long as they share ceremonies such as uposatha, it is not a saṃghabheda. Sasaki argues that these changes later served as an opportunity for the emergence of Mahāyāna Buddhism. In this study, I would like to indicate the problems with ‘the theory that the definition of saṃghabheda has changed’ by reassessing the definition of saṃghabheda in the Vinayapiṭaka and clarifying the relationship between the two types of definitions of saṃghabheda. |
