| Abstract | At the beginning of the Dharmabhāṇaka-Parivarta 法師品 in the Lotus Sūtra, the Buddha makes the prophecy that the whole audience will attain buddhahood in the future 総授記. Although this is an important issue for the Lotus Sūtra, previous studies have discussed it only in the context of the prophecies for each disciple of the Buddha, such as Śāriputra 声聞授記, which appear in previous chapters; they have not considered it as an independent subject for research. Therefore, by comparing the three prophecies for the whole audience in the Sanskrit version of the Lotus Sūtra, this article elucidates that the conditions for the prophecy change from “hearing the dharma or further rejoicing in it” in the lifetime of the Buddha to “hearing the dharma and rejoicing in it” and then to “preserving the dharma or rejoicing in it” after the parinirvāṇa of the Buddha. This change is based on the passages related to srāvaka in previous chapters, and it is the very reason why the theme of doctorine changes from the lifetime of the Buddha to after the parinirvāṇa of the Buddha. |
