AbstractLouis de La Vallée Poussin (1869–1938) was a Belgian scholar who specialised in studies of Buddhism and the Indian subcontinent. Originally published in 1917, this volume contains the substance of the Hibbert Lectures for 1916, which were delivered by La Vallée Poussin at Manchester College, Oxford. The six lectures cover the following areas, related to the central topic of Ancient Buddhism as a discipline of salvation: 'Origins of the Indian Disciplines of Salvation'; 'The Buddhist Soul'; 'Buddhist Definition of Karman'; 'The Doctrine of Karman and Transmigration, Cosmogony, Theogony'; 'Nirvāna'; 'The Path to Nirvāna'.
