| 抄録 | Buddhism during the Choson period has been littlestudied in comparison with the earlier times of theThree Kingdoms, Unified Shilla, and Koryo dynasties.Many studies indicate the low status of Buddhism duringthe dynasty that relied on Neo-Confucian teachings.However，it is the case that even though the traditionwas severely repressed and denied a place in the mainstream of intellectual life，the religion did survivethrough these centuries. It is important to discoverthe means by which this survival occurred. When Buddhismbegan to revive after 1860，it was firmly grounded onthe ancient patterns that were received down throughthe years of the Choson period. When viewed from thisperspective，the tradition can be said to have shownremarkable continuity and strength in the face of officialsuppression. Rather than focusing on the weakness of themonastic and lay situation，this study suggests that muchcan be learned by looking at the aspects which allowed itto maintain a major place in Korean culture. |
