抄録 | The purpose of this study was to determine how local Hindu Indian American communities have maintained or adapted their traditional death and dying rituals in metropolitan Atlanta. Ever since the Olympics were held in Atlanta in 1996, Atlanta has grown into a larger and more diverse city and has attracted many new immigrants. Among them are Hindu Indian immigrants. Since the lifestyle and the laws in Atlanta are quite different from those in India, Hindu Indian immigrants have needed to make modifications to their death and dying rituals. Qualitative methods were used to interview representatives from seven Hindu communities. The issues of diaspora and assimilation are the main concerns of this study. Since there has been little documentation of Hindu communities in Atlanta, this research significantly adds to the information on how Hindu Indians have had to adapt their traditions to Western culture and society. |
