The study is to research the "Body"(身) and "Embody"(體) of body philosophy in The Book of Changes. The description of the meaning of Body in the Book of Changes is limited and repeated. The meaning of the Body is obvious and presents the social values. In other word, Body is the place of per sonal per formance, but it is not only per sonal but also social. The performance of Body includes personal performance and social expectation. Therefore, "Body Cultivation" is the whole performance of individual and society. The meaning of Embody in The Book of Changes is open and extended. It also means the depth of life concerned. Embody is just like a soft container that is not with particular style and limited capacity. It could extend forever and unlimitedly. Embody performs the personal inner morality and humbleness, and reaches level of the ultimate, but the spirit can extend unlimitedly and combine with the universe. Therefore, "Embody Humanity" is the main value for Confucianism. |
