抄録 | Faith has certainly played an important role in the history of of Buddhism, and the Chinese Hua-yen school of Buddhism is no exception in this regard. What can be difficult though is ascertaining the exact role and function of faith.
Focusing on the works of Fa-tsang, a central figure in the history of the Hua-yen school, this study discovers that Fa-tsang employed two different and contradictory definitions of faith. Those definitions emerge in his commentaries on the Hua-yen ching and the Awakening of Faith. What becomes evident is not only do those notions of faith contradict one another, in certain ways, they also contradict the views of the Hua-yen ching and the Awakening of Faith. The question that arises then is, why is this the case?
It is evident that Fa-tsang's notions of faith are intertwined with his views concerning the relationship between faith and enlightenment. Because the causal link between those two states affects the status of their relationship, Fa-tsang is forced to deal with time. As it turns out, that means he must attempt to philosophically construct an interdependent relationship between prior and subsequent events. His attempts in this regard however are plagued by problems related to the nature of time of time.
In the end, these factors related to time explain why Fa-tsang employs two contradictory notions of faith, and also create problems that are so severe, they threaten to undermine the soteriological function of his system. Ironically, these problems, which are rooted in issues stemming from his view of faith, require that Fa-tsang employ faith to resolve them. Whether or not he succeeded, ultimately depends upon the willingness of the aspirant to have faith despite what some parts of Fa-tsang's own explanations say about temporal relations.
The study also includes a full translation of Fa-tsang's Commentary on the Awakening of Faith.
