抄録 | The stupa deposits of the Gandhara region of India are discussed. Originally a royal tumulus or burial mound erected in honor of the Buddha, the stupa symbolized the entry into Final Nirvana and the ultimate achievement of Buddhahood and functioned as a repository for sacred relics. The expansion of the Kushan empire between the early first and the second centuries A.D. coincided with and undoubtedly accelerated the expansion of Buddhism,as it is testified by a wealth of evidence of flourishing Buddhist monasteries with many richly decorated monuments. It is possible to trace this expansion clearly in Afghanistan, where excavations carried out in the early 1830s uncovered the remains of over 50 stupas near Kabul and Jalalabad. The writer goes on to describe the finds excavated in a number of relic deposits in the Gandhara region. |
