抄録 | Chanting is a vital of Buddhist religious observance.
The philosophy of Buddhism has great influence on its music both in terms of aesthetics and symbolism.
This paper will consider aesthetics and symbolism embedded in the practice of Buddhist chanting both as a ritual and as a means of self cultivation. It will discuss the various formal aspects of music such as its repetition of melody, descending melodic line at the end of each phrase,step-wise melodic progression and heterophony. It also involves the use of its unique instruments such as the wooden fish, the bell, the drum and the bronze bowl etc.
A comparison will be made between texts from the earlier Indian Buddhist tradition which oppose the use of music in ritual to the Mahayana tradition which encourages its use. |
