抄録 | The religious dimension cannot be eliminated from a penetrating philosophy of existence, nor the philosophical dimension from a deep religious experience. Both philosophy and religion are essentially metaphysical. I) Survey of development of Buddhism, mainly in Sri Lanka, in 3 phases:Buddha's original teaching in Pali canon,Asoka's institutionalized religion, popular religion. From the historical degeneration arises the dilemma formulated in the title. Ii) Schopenhauer's criticism of Kant's system of transcendental ideas (soul, world, god). Defence of Kant on the broadest level of the biological function of popular religion. Iii) Modern actuality of Buddhism. The ideal of reviving the archetypal model of Pacceka-Buddho as the "silent sage"--Muni--teaching by example, not dogmatically but paradigmatically. |
