抄録 | "Buddha, Dharma, Sangha" The life of the Buddha, the unfolding of the Dharma, and the growth of the Sangha are framed in the sweep of world history. Includes an overview of Buddhist texts preserved in canonical collections. From the chapter "The Buddha Presents the Teachings,": During his years of teaching, the Buddha turned the Wheel of Dharma 3 times, in accord with the capacity of his audience. In the First Turning, he presented the teachings common to all Buddhist schools, showing his disciples how to conduct their lives in accord with the path that leads to realization. In the Second Turning, he presented the teachings of the Prajnaparamita, which demonstrate the nature of reality as open and free from all limitation. In the Third Turning, he revealed the vision of the Enlightened Ones and the heart of all realization. The teachings of the First Turning are associated with Deer Park, those of the Second Turning are associated with Vulture Peak in Rajagrha, and those of the Third Turning are associated with Malaya and Vaisali. Why did the Buddha present so many different forms of teachings? The answer lies in the infinite variety of patterns that humans create for themselves through their actions, or karma. Through their own acts, individuals shape the structure of their awareness and their capacity for insight. When we speak of the Buddha's omniscience, we are referring mainly to his complete knowledge of such karmic patterns. On this basis…the Buddha knew exactly how to address beings on all levels of awareness, each of them subject to a unique set of obstacles and difficulties. With great, unending compassion he presented the 84,000 teachings, enabling each to understand according to his ability, and establishing the basis for the 9 vehicles of realization.
