聖嚴法師的如來藏教法與時代意義=Master Sheng Yen's Teaching on the Tathāgatagarbha and Its Contemporary Relevance |

| 抄録 | 聖嚴法師雖在《法鼓家風》表明「我講的禪不是如來藏」，但是於《自家寶
藏》法師則說「我敢相信，適應未來的世界佛教，仍將以如來藏思想為其主軸」，
甚至在他晚年的力作《華嚴心詮》仍表示「今後的世界佛教…相信還得要靠如
來藏思想」。同樣的，如果法師說他講的禪不是如來藏，為何於〈承先啟後的中
華禪法鼓宗〉小冊及其他著作中，他又多次提到「如來藏」對法鼓山的建設、
漢傳佛教及當代佛教的重要性？上述資料，如單就表面文字分別解讀，看似前
後不一致，應加以說明與釐清。然而，法師雖著作等身，卻無一本專著討論他
個人的如來藏教法與實踐，因此亟需將法師如來藏相關資料作一整理，以便學
人參照。是以，筆者不揣簡陋先行拋磚，以期引玉，希望能有更多人深入瞭解
法師的如來藏思想、如來藏信仰、如來藏教法與實踐，以圓滿法師「在承先啟
後的原則下，將漢傳佛教建立為法鼓山主體」的心願。
是以，本研究借助法師主要著作《法鼓全集》及少部分未收入全集的出版
品為基本文獻，依法師〈如何研究我走的路〉為準則，進行下列研究步驟。首
先，進行資料蒐集、整理，將文獻彙整與編排，就佛性、如來藏等相關主題建
置一簡要的資料庫。其次，參考相關文獻進行考證與查核，依照法師著作發表
年分，重新排列文獻順序。然後，依此資料庫，分判法師一生的如來藏學思歷
程為四期，以探尋法師如何逐步開展其獨特的如來藏教法與實踐。
由於法師從 2001 年起即就「近代善知識之中，對於如來藏的信仰，有所批
評」以致學人無從遵循，數次提出回應，並表達他個人對如來藏的看法與信念。
是以本文，擬先藉所建構的資料庫，以法師就「近代善知識對如來藏批判」
所做的回應，瞭解近代大師們對當代佛教的「衰敗」與「誤解」等現象，如何
做時代性的詮釋，甚或以之作為教法與實踐。
進而，就法師的如來藏教法，以其「教理」與「禪法」作為觀念的釐清與
方法的遵循，探看法師教禪時提出「人們對如來藏誤解」的解決方案，並以此
作為判准的依據。
最後，則依此判准，探討法師的如來藏當代實踐及其貢獻，以瞭解其所教
導的如來藏法門的國際性與未來性之時代意義。
Although Master Sheng Yen declared in his book The Dharma Drum Way 《法
鼓家風》that his Chan is not Tathāgatagarbha, in his other books such as Treasure in
Our Own Backyard《自家寶藏》and Commentary on The Origin of Humanity《華
嚴心詮》he mentions his belief that Tathāgatagarbha thought will be the mainstream
of the future global Buddhism. If he believed that his Chan Teaching is not based on
the Tathāgatagarbha doctrine, then why did he often mention the importance of
Tathāgatagarbha doctrine in the development of Chinese Buddhism and
contemporary Buddhism in Dharma Drum Lineage of Chinese Chan: Inheriting the
Past and Inspiring the Future〈承先啟後的中華禪法鼓宗〉and other works? It
would thus appear at first glance that there exists some kind of discrepancy between
these different works which would necessitate some further elaboration. Yet, despite
his prolific writing career, Master Sheng Yen has never devoted an entire book or
article to clarifying his own understanding and application of this doctrine.
The purpose of this paper is to systematically organize Master Sheng Yen’s
writings on Tathāgatagarbha so that others may use it as a source which can
facilitate future research into this subject. My analysis and research clarifies Master
Sheng Yen’s unique understanding of Tathāgatagarbha doctrine and his aim and
elucidates the way in which his teaching and practice of the Tathāgatagarbha
doctrine served to promote his vision of “Inheriting the Past and Inspiring the
Future” as well as “establishing Chinese Buddhism as the core of Dharma Drum
Mountain”. |
