抄録 | This is the fifth part of my annotated Japanese translation of the Hetubinduṭīkā (HBT), Arcaṭa’s commentary on the Hetubindu (HB) of Dharmakīrti. It covers line 11 on page 21 to line 11 on page 23 of HBT. In this portion of HB Dharmakīrti refers to the perceptual knowledge of a logical mark in its locus as follows: A perceptual-judgement-mediated knowledge of the probans, whose object is the particular as seen, arises in a person who has seen by perception in its uncommon form the smoky region, whose nature is excluded from other objects. Arcaṭa comments this phrase at great length. He argues that a logical mark can be grasped by perceptual knowledge. He takes Kumalira for an opponent of this portion and quotes a few verses of Slokavārttika of Kumālira. In this translation I generally refer to another commentary on HB, the Hetubinduṭīkā of Vinītadeva available only in Tibetan translation, as well as to the Hetubinduṭīkā of Durvekamisra, which is a sub-commentary on HBT.
