In the Kizil murals, there is a series of scenes depicting episodes from Sakyamuni’s life. Among them is an image showing Sakyamuni preaching to a young bhiksu, and beside the bhiksu is a large man standing in water and holding a young boy. A comparison of the image with relevant passages from the Ekottaragama-sutra leads to the conclusion that the image depicts Sakyamuni preaching the twelve karmas using different parables, and that the man with the boy in the water represents the scene of King Asura bathing his son in the ocean. The father and son, therefore, also correlate respectively to the Buddha and Ananda in previous births. |
