| 抄録 | 한국 불교 간화선은 대혜에서 전해온다고 보기보다는 조선 후기이후로 『선요』를 강원의 교재로 채택함에 따라 고봉의 직접적인 영향을 받아왔다. 그러나 『선요』에 나타난 고봉의 간화는 대혜의 간화와 비교해 볼 때 많은 차이점이 있다. 대혜의 간화가 의정에 주안점을 두고 의심이 자연스럽게 형성되어 익숙해지면 간화수행이 힘을 더는 것을 발견하게 됨으로써 득력처가 된다고 한다. 그러나 고봉은 의정에 대해서는 결과적 확신을 가지고 처음에는 그냥 밀어붙이고 죽기 살기로 노력하다가 보면 득력처를 발견할 수 있게 된다고 한다. 그래서 무자화두를 들려고 애쓰다 보면 일상생활 속에서 별다른 용력을 쓰지 말고 의심이 발현하면서 공부가 된다고 하는 대혜에 비하여 고양이 그림을 죽기 살기로 그리다 보면 붓 끝에서 산 고양이가 돌출한다고 하는 고봉의 화두는 전혀 다른 논리와 수행방법이라고 할 수 있다. 현금의 한국불교의 많은 수행자들은 고봉의 간화를 간화선이라고 배우겠지만 본고는 고봉의 간화를 대혜의 간화와 비교분석함으로써 몽산의 간화와 유사한 ‘만드는 화두’의 일종이라는 결론을 내리게 되었다. 그러나 이러한 수행적 화두는 한 경계를 깨달을 때 까지 무한한 노력이 필요하여 성공할 확률이 거의 없으므로 오늘날 간화선이 수행자로부터 외면받게 되었고 중생제도는 요원한 일이 되어버린 원인이 되었다고 생각된다. 이에 본고는 오늘날 한국불교 간화선 침체의 원인이 고봉의 간화에서 비롯되었다고 보고 고봉의 화두에 대한 개념과 화두 드는 방식, 의정을 유지하는 과정, 득력처에 대한 견해, 깨달음에 대한 입장, 그리고 대분심을 대혜의 『서장』과 비교하면서 분석하고자 한다.
By adopting Chanyao(Seon yo) 禪要 (Essentials of Seon) as the textbook for seminaries in the late Joseon Dynasty, Korean Ganhwa Seon(Kanhua chan) 看話禪 was directly influenced by Gao-Feng 高峯, rather than following Daehye's(Dahui's) 大慧 lineage of Ganhwa(Kanhua) 看話. Gao-Feng's 高華 concept of Ganhwa(Kanhua) 看話 (questioning a koan) as expressed in the Chanyao(Seon yo) 禪要 is different from that of Daehye's(Dahui's) 大慧 on many points. Daehye(Dahui) focuses on the feeling of doubt 疑情, stating that feelings of doubt would naturally arise and that once accustomed to this feeling, one will notice the burden of Ganhwa(Kanhua) practice lessen in the mind. The easing of this burden would become the source of power 得力處 for further practice. In contrast, Gao-Feng said that one should have the conviction that enlightenment will eventually occur about the feeling of doubt, and that one should practice as if to the death at first, eventually discovering the source of power along the way.
In other words, Daehye(Dahui) says that as long as one makes an effort to practice the Hua-t'ou(hwadu) 話頭 (similar to Jp. koan) in everyday life, the feeling of doubt will emerge without any extra effort and aid one's practice. This is absolutely different from the logic and discipline of Gao-Feng, who says that only after trying to draw a cat in a do-or-die effort will a live cat spring out from the canvas.
And yet many disciples of Korean Buddhism has held GaoFeng's method of practice as the standard of Ganhwa Seon(Kanhua Chan) practice, and dismiss Daehye's(Dahui's) method as a kind of hwadu-in-the-making, like Mengshan's 蒙山.
However, there is little chance in succeeding with Gao-Feng's 'Disciplinal Hua-t'ou'(Hwadu') because it requires infinite effort to achieve enlightenment. Thus, today Kanhua Chan(Ganhwa Seon) 看話禪 has become ignored by the practitioners of Korean Buddhism while making the task of saving mankind a remote possibility.
Therefore, I argue that the cause of Ganhwa Seon's(Kanhua Chan's) stagnation in Korean Buddhism today originated from Gao-Feng's 高峯 Chanyao(Seon yo) 禪要. I conduct a comparative analysis of the Chanyao(Seon yo) 禪要 with Daehye's(Dahui's) 大慧 Letters 書狀, focusing on their concept of the Hua-t'ou(hwadu) 話頭, methods of practice, the process of maintaining the feeling of doubt 疑情, obtaining a source of power 得力處, and their positions on Enlightenment. |
