| 抄録 | 본고는 조선 후기 천태사상의 수용을 세 가지로 고찰하였다. 첫째는 전통의학서인 허준(許浚, 1539~1615)의 『동의보감(東醫寶鑑)』에 보이는 천태지관의 내용과 그 수용에 대한 고찰이다. 두 번째는월창거사(⽉窓居⼠) 김대현(⾦⼤鉉)의 『선학입문(禪學⼊⾨)』을 통하여, 조사선 주류의 학계에서 천태 삼종지관의 하나인 『석선바라밀차제법문(釋禪波羅蜜次第法⾨)』이 수용된 양상과 그 의의에 대해 고찰하였다. 셋째는 근대기 불교 개혁운동 속에서 보이는 천태사상의 여러 가지 양상을 통하여 근대 불교사에서 천태사상이 어떻게 수용되었는지 알아보고자 하였다.
먼저, 『동의보감』에는 유교‧도교‧불교의 의학사상들이 들어 있는데, 이중에서 내경편에는 인체의병인(病因)과 병의 양상(病相)을 진단하고 치료하는데, 천태의 『마하지관(摩訶⽌觀)』 병환경(病患境)에 보이는 병인론과 병의 양상에 대한 내용이 보인다. 또한 내경편의 태식법(胎息法)을 천태의 병환경의 “지(⽌)의 대치법”을 직접 인용하고 있다.
다음으로, 『선학입문』은 난해하고 복잡한 천태 차제지관 법문인 『석선바라밀차제법문』을 간략히 줄여서 쉽게 선(禪) 수행에 들어갈 수 있도록 편찬하였다. 이러한 천태선법의 수용은 당시 조사선의 난해함을 극복하고, 많은 대중들이 능력에 따라 선바라밀을 닦도록 배려한 것이었다.
끝으로, 근대기 불교계 개혁운동을 촉발시킨 조선총독부의 관리서(管理署) 사찰령 36개조 제1조에는천태 교문의 핵심인 8교 교판사상이 수용되고 있다. 그밖에 이 시기 불교잡지에서도 천태 교학사상들이빈번하게 등장하고 있다. 이처럼 천태학이 근대기 개혁운동에도 수용되고 있음을 확인 할 수 있다.
이로써 조선 후기 조선 불교계에는 천태사상의 두 가지 양상인 교문과 관문 사상들이 다양하게 수용되고 있음을 보여준다
This paper studies the acceptance of Tiantai Buddhism during the late Choson Dynasty in three ways. The first is a study on the acceptance of Tiantai’s method of calm and concentration in Heo Jun (許浚, 1539~1615)’s historic medical book “Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑).” The second is a study on the acceptance and significance of the appearance of “An Explanation of the Gateway to Seon Paramita,” one of Tiantai’s three modes of entering Seon, in mainstream academia of Patriarchal meditation, as seen through Wolchang Kim Dae-hyeon(⾦ ⼤鉉)'s “Seon-Hak-Ip-Moon(禪學⼊⾨).” The third looks at what Tiantai thought was accepted in the modern history of Buddhism through the study of the various aspects in which Tiantai Buddhism appeared in the modern Buddhist reform movement.
First, in “Donguibogam,” which contains medical thoughts from Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism, the Naegyeongpyeon chapter includes material on the causes and cures of illness from the Tiantai writing of “The Great Calming and Contemplation.” In addition, Naegyeongpyeon’s Taesikbeop (胎息法, a breathing method) directly incorporates Tiantai’s “treatment of cessation.” “Seon-Hak-Ip-Moon” was published to simplify the difficult and complicated “An Explanation of the Gateway to Seon Paramita,” a Tiantai writing on meditation, making it easier for people to practice Seon. The acceptance of such Tiantai methods of Seon helped overcome the difficulties of patriarchal meditation at the time and allowed the public to practice Seon Paramita.
Finally, in the Temple Act as promulgated by the Japanese GovernmentGeneral of Korea, which triggered the modern Buddhist reform movements, the first out of the 36 articles accepted The eight teachings of the thoughts of Gyosang Panseok thoughts, which are core tenets of Tiantai’s gateway of doctrine. Contemporary Buddhist magazines also featured frequent appearances of the thoughts of Tiantai. Hence, we can see that Tiantai Buddhism was accepted during the modern reform movements.
These results show how two aspects of Tiantai Buddhism, the gateways of doctrine and practice, were accepted in the Buddhist world of the late Choson Dynasty in various ways.
