| 抄録 | 이 논문은 국제적인 시야와 무대에서 한국학으로서 불교학의 보편적 언어와 문법을 확보하기 위한 방안을 모색한 글이다. 국제화 세계화 시대를 사는 학자들의 가장 큰 화두는 학문 간의 상호 소통의 문제일 것이다. 통역자를 대동하든 번역자를 매개하든 우리말과 외국어의 소통의 문제는 시대적 과제라고 할 수 있다. 다른 시간과 공간에 살아온 이들이 발화하는 말과 글 즉 언어와 문장은 서로의 만남 속에서 어떻게 이해되고 인식되고 있을까. 국내의 무대에서 이루어지는 ‘국학’의 성과와 국제의 무대에서 이루어지는 ‘한국학’의 성과는 학자들 사이에서 어떻게 공유되고 소통되고 있을까.
이러한 물음을 해소하기 위해서는 국학과 한국학의 성과뿐만 아니라 국내외에서 이루어진 불교학 자체의 연구 논저를 공유하고 소통하여 연구를 심화하는 노력이 요청된다. 먼저 국내외에서 이루어진 불교학의 여러 논저들을 우리말로 번역할 수 있는 사회적 여론 형성과 제도적 뒷받침이 이루어져야 한다. 이 과정을 통해 이루어지는 국내외의 연구 성과가 세계의 시민들 속에 살아있는 성취가 되고, 국외의 연구 성과가 우리의 국민들 속에 살아있는 성취가 될 때 우리는 국제화와 세계화의 과제를 해결해 갈 수 있을 것이다. 결국 통역이든 번역이든 궁극적인 목표는 연구 결과물의 공유와 소통에 있다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 몇 가지 과제가 해결되어야 한다.
첫째, 고전은 一者 번역을 넘어 多者 번역이 되어야 한다. 다자 번역이 이루어지더라도 책임번역자가 반드시 있어야만 그 성과가 온전히 집성될 수 있다. 한국불교 고전의 경우에는 원전의 다자 번역을 통한 우리말 대본이 먼저 이루어져야 한다. 이 대본에 기초하여 三藏 傳承의 다자 번역 형식을 원용하면 많은 부분을 해소할 수 있다. 둘째, 대학의 영어권번역연구소와 전문 번역인들을 적극적으로 활용해야 한다. 특히 국내외의 불교학 연구 성과를 공유하기 위해서는 영어를 모국어로 하는 사람과 영어 번역이 가능한 한국인을 적극적으로 활용해야 한다. 셋째, 번역본은 국내외의 유수한 출판사와 유명 대학출판사에서 출판해야 한다. 전문성과 시장성을 갖춘 출판사에서 간행함으로써 번역 논저가 연구자의 손에 직접 닿을 수 있게 해야만 한다. 이렇게 되면 완성도가 보다 높은 번역본이 출간되고 소통되어 좀더 심화된 연구 결과가 나올 수 있을 것이다.따라서 한국어와 영어 권역 불교학술 논저의 공유와 소통 및 연구의 심화를 위해서는 한국학으로서 불교학을 연구해야 한다. 그러기 위해서는 1) 한문번역에 익숙한 이들을 발탁하여 지원함으로써 한국불교 고전의 완역본을 확보해야 할 것이다. 2) 우리말로 완역된 한국불교 고전을 영어를 모국어로 하는 사람을 발탁하여 번역할 수 있도록 해야 하며, 동시에 국외에서 이루어진 불교학의 여러 논저들을 영어 번역이 가능한 한국인을 선발하여 번역할 수 있도록 해야 한다. 나아가 3) 이렇게 이루어진 번역본을 국내외의 유수한 출판사와 유명 대학출판사에서 출판하여 연구자가 활용할 수 있도록 하여야 한다. 그리하여 우리의 연구 성과가 세계의 시민들이 접할 수 있는 결과물로 다가가고, 국외의 연구 성과가 우리의 국민들이 접할 수 있는 결과물 다가올 때, 우리는 한국 불교학의 세계화와 세계 불교학의 한국화라는 과제를 해결해 갈수 있을 것이다.
This study was intended to explore the measures that could help examine universal language and grammar used in Buddhist Studies which were performed as Korean Studies based on global insight and in global community. Interdisciplinary communication might be the most outstanding issue among scholars in this era of internalization and globalization. Communication between Korean language and foreign language may represent the challenge of the times, regardless of whether the communication is facilitated by interpreter or translator. How have the writings and words articulated by those living in different time and space, i.e., the language an sentences, been understood and perceived when they encounter each other?
How are the results of ‘National Studies’ at home and results of ‘Korean Studies’ abroad being communicated and shared among scholars? To answer this question, we need to share research articles of Buddhist Studies which are carried out in Korea or abroad, as well as results of National Studies and Korean Studies, and further deepen the research.
Above all, there should be groundswell of public opinion throughout society for translation of various articles of Buddhist Studies performed in Korea and overseas countries, along with institutional support. Through such process, results of domestic and overseas studies should become viable outcomes for citizens around the globe and results of overseas studies should become viable outcomes for Korean citizens. Then, we will be able to resolve issues of internationalization and globalization. After all, translation and interpretation ultimately aim to promote communication and sharing of results derived from studies. To resolve this issue, several tasks should be completed.
First, classics should be translated by multiple translators, instead of single translator. For Korea Buddhism classics, original scripture should be first translated into Korean version through multi-party translation.
Based on the translated scripture, many ambiguities can be resolved through multi-party translation of succession of Tipitaka(三藏 傳承).
Second, translation research institutes of universities in English-speaking countries and professional translators should be fully leveraged.
Particularly, native English speakers and Koreans capable of translating English into Korean should be fully utilized |
