| 抄録 | 본 논문에서는 빨리율을 중심으로 테라와다 출가수행자의 의식주 생활을 살펴보고자 한다. 빨리율에서는 四依法, 즉 의식주와 약에 관한 네 가지 엄격한 생활 원칙을 이상으로 제시하면서도, 請食이나 施衣, 精舍 등과 같은예외 규정이나 淨法이라 불리는 일종의 편법 등이 폭넓게 허용되고 있다. 후대가 될수록 후자의 생활 방법이 일반화된 것으로 보이는데, 이는 승단내외 환경의 변화에 따라 생겨난 일반사회의 요구나 승단 내부의 필요성을 적극적으로 수용한 결과라고 생각된다. 그런데, 그 변화 속에서도 출가수행자로써 지향해야 할 절제된 의식주 생활을 위한 몇 가지 원칙만은 변함없이 지켜지고 있었다. 본 논문에서는 빨리율의 의식주 관련 조문들을 검토함으로써, 이 몇 가지 원칙에 대해 고찰해 보고자 한다. 이를 통해 테라와다 불교도들이 일상생활 속에서 실천하고자 했던 수행자의 바람직한 모습, 그리고 승단을 지탱하는 기반인 재가신자와의 원활한 관계를 위해 기울였던 노력 등을 보여주게 될 것이다.
This paper will review the food, clothing and housing of the renunciant practitioners of Theravāda with a focus on the
Vinaya-piṭaka.
The Vinaya-piṭaka provides strict rules for the four necessities of food, clothing, shelter and medicine. However, it also has stipulations for broad exceptions such as meal invitations 請食, donated clothing 施衣, and monasteries 精舍. In addition to these, an expedient called ‘kappa’淨法 was also allowed.
Later on all those exceptions were widely accepted in the daily life of the Buddhist community (Saṃgha). It was supposed to come from the changes in the Buddhist environment in accordance with the demands of society. The Buddhist community also positively accommodated the needs of the Saṃgha.
On the other hand, some basic principles regarding the food, clothing and housing of renunciant practitioners were strictly observed with no exceptions. This paper will examine some articles of the Vinaya-piṭaka in order to study its principles.
Through this study, the desirable image of the Theravāda practitioners wished to be reflected in daily life and the endeavor of Saṃgha, as a basis of Buddhist community, to communicate with the society will be introduced. |
