抄録 | The discourse of mahāpadesa in the Mahāparinibbāna-suttanta throws light on how early Buddhist texts were judged authoritative. The Dhamma and the Vinaya which the Buddha taught existed only in the collective memory of monks and lay people. Oral tradition allowed the Buddha`s words to be changed or omitted or added to. The question of what were the Buddha`s genuine words(Buddhavacana) must have been a big issue for the Buddhist Community after the Buddha`s parinibbāna. The declaration of the mahāpadesa shows the canonization of the dhamma and vinaya, which were believed to be an embodiment of the words of the Buddha. The mahāpadesa is studied to show that the early Buddhist Community`s historical attempt to establish the Buddhist Scripture from a fluid oral tradition. In order for the Community to keep going without disputes, monks and nuns should find an authoritative substitute for the Buddha. In monastic life, great importance is attached to the preservation and mastering of the sacred texts. To the texts which they preserve they give an absolute authority. However, this attempt to have standard Buddhist canon has not been successful in the history of Buddhist literature. In the course of Buddhism, new texts such as Mahāyāna texts were created and accepted as the words of the Buddha. |
