| 抄録 | 중국에 밀교가 최초 유입되었을 때 남북조시대를 중심으로 진언과 다라니, 부속의례 중심의 초기밀교가 유행하였다. 서역승들의 활약으로 불교는 밀교를 통해 중국의 황제와 지배층에게 영험 있는 종교로 인식되었고, 불교의 지지세력이 늘어나면서 비로소 교학의 연구기반이 형성되었다. 남북조시대를 통한 중국인들의 불교교학의 이해는 수시대에 활동한 智者大師에게 『법화』, 『반야』를 비롯해 『금광명경』을 비롯한 밀교경전을 섭렵하게된 계기가 되었다. 지자대사는 사종삼매 가운데 반행반좌삼매를 통해 밀교의 의궤와 행법을 수용하였고 이후 천태의 교학과 수행체계에는 밀교적 교의와 소재가 조금씩 인용되었다. 당시대에 접어들면서 제자인 灌頂의 활약으로 인해 지자대사의 사상이 집대성되었고 이 가운에 『금광명경」은 중요한 비중을 차지하게 된다. 지자대사는 『금광명경』을 통해 대승불교사상의 요체인 반야사상, 보살사상, 법신사상 등을 이해하고 전달하는데 치중했다. 지자, 관정 이후 천태의 스승들은 『법화경』 연구와 더불어 밀교와 관련해 관음의식과 더불어 『천수경』, 『금광명경』과 같은 주석을 남겨놓았다. 그러나 천태의 종학에서 보이는 밀교소재들은 대부분 懺悔法이나 滅罪에 국한하여 설행된 경우가 많고 당시대 『大日經』, 『金剛頂經』의 번역이 이루어진 후에도 중기밀교의 발전된 밀교의식이나 사상을 반영하지 않는다. 오히려 『법화경』의 수행을 밀교의궤에 입각하여 발전시킨 분은 불공삼장이다. 불공은 『법화만다라위의형색법경』과, 『성취묘법연화경왕유가관지의궤』를 역출하였는데, 이 두 가지 경궤는 『법화경』에 입각한 만다라의 세계관을 구축하고, 『법화경』의 교리를 수행의궤로 설한 것이다.
Historically Lotus Sutra(法華經) have shared the development of Mahayana Buddhism with Esoteric Buddhism as it is found lots of incantatory and esoteric elements in Lotus Sutra like other Mahayana Buddhist scriptures. In 4-5th Century Buddhism landed in China when Lotus Sutra and Esoteric Mahayana Scriptures were translated almost at the same time which most of the translater was from the Western regions of Asia like Fó-tú- chéng(佛圖澄), Darmaraksa(竺法護) who were excellent in incantatory rite in Esoteric Buddhism. These monks persuaded the emperors and rulers of the Chinese regions at that time to believe in the power of prestige of Buddha and obey the higher religious norm.
The Lotus Sutra have been done a central role of establishing the doctrines and practice system of Tientai(天台) school in Chinese Buddhism. His ven. Zhiyi(智顗) seeing the Mantras and Dharanis along with the incarnation of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, Buddhist Stupas understood those elements of Esoteric Buddhism in Lotus Sutra as a supreme power come from stages of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas mainly on the ground of fulfilling primitive religious wishes. Zhiyi set a high value on the Scripture for Humane Kings(仁王經) and Sutra of Golden Light(金光明經) as those two scriptures not only present the supreme power of Buddhist Bodhisattvas and gods and goddesses but also includes the Buddhist ideas of how to rule a country and save national people. In the commentary of those two scriptures it is found lots of paragraphs that illuminate Buddhist moralities and principles to rulers and emperors at that time and draw the Mahayana ideas of Perfect Wisdom and Buddha-kayas, etc.
In Tang dynasty two major scriptures of Esoteric Buddhism in Northeast Asia like Vairocana Sutra(大日經) and Vajra Peak Tantra(金剛頂經) were translated into Chinese by Subhakarasimha(善無畏) and Vajrabodhi(金剛智) so that developed and refined system of Esoteric Buddhism was known to Chinese Buddhist and flourished in China but the influences of the developed Esoteric Buddhism was insignificant. Because Tientai school just kept and laid importance of traditional doctrines and practice systems like Calming(止) and Dscerning(觀) or Visualization of Three Stages with One Concentrated Mind(一心三觀) instead Tientai school still kept elements of Esoteric Buddhism as a incantatory power of guarding practitioner and eliminating delusion of guilt.
