| 抄録 | 불교에는 많은 종류의 수행법이 존재한다. 그 수행법의 일차적인 목적은 다름 아닌 ‘지금 여기(diṭṭhe vā dhamme)’에서 고통의 문제를 해결하는데 있다고 생각한다. 이러한 기본적인 입장에서 사무량심을 고찰해 보고자 하였다. 주지하듯이 사무량심은 사범주라고도 한다. 즉 사후에 브라흐만과 함께 머물게 하는 수행법이란 의미이다. 즉 주안점이 현재가 아닌 사후에 있는 것이다. 이러한 성격의 사범주 혹은 사무량심은 경전 곳곳에서 쉽게 볼 수 있고, 그 예도 풍부하다. 그러나 본고에서는 범천에 태어나는 수행으로서의 사범주 혹은 사무량심의 용례는 배제하였다.
사무량심이 수행법의 한 종류라고 하는 한, 그것의 본래적 목적은 단순히 범천에 태어나는데 있는 것으로 보기에는 불교의 목적-붇다는 어디까지나 해탈에 그 초점을 두었다-과 부합하지 않는 것으로 보인다. 물론 사후에 대한 내용이 비불교적이라는 것이 아니라, 수행의 본래 목적이 좋은 곳에 태어나거나 좋은 가문에 태어나는데 있지 않다는 말이다. 따라서 해탈의 성취방법으로서의 사무량심과 범천에 태어나는 수행법으로서의 사무량심/사범주 가운데, 전자가 후자보다 본래적 의미였음을 고찰하고자 하였다. 이러한 문제의식에서 초기경전 가운데, 운문경전과 산문경전 속에 설해져 있는 사무량심의 용례 가운데, 번뇌의 소멸을 통한 해탈의 추구, 혹은 사선과 같은 분명한 선정의 방법으로 기술하고 있는 내용이 있는지 조사, 검토하였다.
There are several practices in the Buddhism. The purpose of buddhist practices is not to be born in heaven(brahma loka) after death but to liberate from suffering now and here.
In this basic position, I will consider the four immeasurables. As we know, the four immeasurables are called the four brahmavihāra(abiding with Brahman) which has a viewpoint not present but after death.
We can easily find some examples in many early suttas such as born in heaven(brahma loka) through the four brahmavihāra-practice. However I excluded the examples of the four brahmavihāra.
Because the original purpose of practicing is on liberating from suffer, if the four immeasurables is a buddhist practice. Buddha always took a profound interest in the liberation not born in heaven. Therefore I think that the purpose of birth in heaven is not accord with Buddha's purpose.
Of course, I don't say that the four brahmavihāra is a non-buddhist practice. Just I would like to say the original purpose of buddhist practice is not born in heaven or good family.
So, I will consider that the original meaning of the four immeasurable is a liberating path.
In this viewpoint, I researched and examined the examples of the four immeasurable as a path for extinction of passions or the pursuit of liberation like a four jhāna in verse and prose canons.
