| 抄録 | 근대 일본불교는 메이지 유신의 과정에서 파생된 폐불훼석(廢佛毁釋) 이후 새로운 상황에 직면하여 개혁을 서두르지 않을 수 없었다. 종단 내외의 다양한 개혁운동 가운데에는 야마지키 벤네이(山崎弁栄)의 광명회 활동을 들 수 있다. 그의 광명주의는 자비와 지혜의 아미타여래를 오미오야(大御親)로 부르고, 통불교 내지는 통종교적인 입장에서 사상을 체계화한 것에 바탕하고 있다. 평생 전국을 제자들과 함께 다니며, 강연과 결연을 통한 포교활동은 물론 별시염불회를 통한 신앙운동을 일으켰다.
이러한 운동은 급격하게 변모해 가는 일본근대사회에 새로운 활력을 불어넣어주었다. 특히 기존의 정토신앙을 현실에 맞게 해석하고, 신화적인 요소를 비신화함으로써 이성이 지배하는 근대인들의 각광을 받을 수 있었다. 일본의 불교계는 정토신앙을 기반으로 한 장례불교의 이미지를 가지고 있다. 이러한 면에서 현실초월과 사후정토의 희원이 중심인 정토신앙을 현실 속에 구현함으로써 전통적인 신앙을 새롭게 해석한 것으로 볼 수 있을 것이다.
자본주의와 민족국가의 형성이라고 하는 사회적 상황 하에서 근대불교가 처한 한계를 인식하고 종교적 자각을 통해 동시대인들의 삶을 승화시킨 야마자키 벤네이의 광명회 활동은 이처럼 동아시아 불교계의 근대적 변용의 입장에서 새롭게 조명할 필요가 있음을 본 논고는 보여주고 있다.
The japanese buddhism in modern times was obliged to reform in the face of new situation after suppressing on buddhism derived from Meiji Revolution. There is Komyoukai of Yamazaki Bennei among the various reform movements inside and outside the orders. He preached Komyousyugi and called the Amitābha of mercy and wisdem as Oomioya. The Komyousyugi was based on a system of thought formed in relation with Mahāyāna buddhism and eastern and western religions.
He, who was accompanied by his disciples for all his life, has driven religious movement by preaching Buddhist teachings, setting up the providence of Buddha, and special meetings of chanting the Buddha. This movement has galvanized the society of modern japan in the drastic change. This was being in the limelight of modern people who was ruled by reason, for an existing belief of the Pure Land was interpreted to match the realities of modern times, and demythicized the Amitābha. The buddhist world in japan has funeral image based on the belief of the Pure Land.
We may consider that Yamazaki Bennei interpreted an existing belief as new one by being realized the belief of the Pure Land in modern times, which was centerd on the Pure Land after the death. This thesis shows that we need to shed new light on the movement of Komyoukai and the thoughts of Yamazaki who recognized religious limitations in modern buddhism under developing capitalism and nationalism, and converted lives of same age into religious relief and peace by his spiritual enlightenment. |
