| 抄録 | 근현대의 선승으로 한평생 참선수행과 중생교화의 삶을 살았던 경봉선사의 선사상을 보조국사의 선사상과 비교하여 고찰해보았다.
종밀의 선종에 대한 분류에 의거하면 경봉의 선관(禪觀)은 직현심성종(直顯心性宗)의 입장이다. ‘심성을 곧장 드러내는 종파’의 측면에서 보조와 경봉은 같은 입장이다. 이는 곧 ‘심행처멸 언어도단’으로 선의 세계란 언어의 길이 끊어지고 사량분별이 끊어진 곳이다.
시대에 따라 교가 우선이던 때가 있었고 선이 우선이던 때가 있었다. 이에 따라 보조와 경봉이 선과 교를 어떻게 바라보았는지 비교해보았다. 보조와 경봉은 선사로서 화엄을 중요시 여기고, 선교회통과 선교일치의 맥락에 서있다. 근래의 출가와 재가에서도 선과 교의 합일점을 찾으려 하고 이 시대에 맞는 수행법을 찾으려 힘쓰고 있다.
또 한국의 간화선 수용은 고려 무신집권기 보조에 의해 수용되었다. 그는 『절요』 뒷부분에서 간화선을 소개하였고 『간화결의론』을 저술하기도 하였다. 한국의 간화선은 보조의 제자인 진각 혜심과 고려 말 태고보우, 나옹혜근, 백운경한 등의 여말 삼사를 거쳐 조선 청허휴정에 이어지며 성격이 점차 변했다. 한국 선문의 간화선에 대한 시각과 입장이 이론적으로 통합된 것은 조선말 백파긍선에 와서이다.
경봉의 간화선은 이러한 백파의 영향에서 근대선의 길을 연 경허의 선사상과 관련을 맺고 있다고 할 수 있다. 그는 보조의 돈오점수 사상을 계승하고 있는데, 찾아오는 선납자들에게, 또는 재가자에게 자신만의 화두를 제시한다. 이러한 경봉의 간화선은 현재 살아가고 있는 모든 사람들에게 용기와 희망과 자비심을 키워주는 청량제 역할이 되고 있다.
In this study Seon master Gyeongbong(鏡峰), a outstanding modern monk in Korean Buddhism, compared with the Nation Master Bojo Jinul(普照 知訥, 1158～1210)
Seon(禪) is beyond word and letter. We could reach only through the practice. They say that it is the realm beyond mental speculation(心行處滅), the cessation of the way of the word(言語道斷). So thus Śakyamuni Buddha's the dharma-door of non-duality(不二法門) was Great silence with no words(黙言).
According to Jongmil's classification in the Seon school, Gyeongbong stands on the straight revealment of the mind's nature(直顯心性宗) which Bojo Jinul had asserted. That is the realm beyond mental speculation(心行處滅), the cessation of the way of the word(言語道斷).
As the predominate school between the Doctrinal and the Seon, changes with the times, their opinion on the Doctrine and the Seon was systematically compared. They both placed emphasis on Hwayen(華嚴) as the Seon master. Also they asserted both theconciliation of Seon and doctrine(禪敎會通) and the convergence of Seon and doctrine(禪敎一致). Recently both monk and laity look for the union of Seon and doctrine, and the practice in tune with the times.
Ganhwa Seon(看話禪), i.e. Word contemplation meditation was imported by the National Master Bojo Jinul in the period of Military regime of Goryeo Dynasty. He introduced Ganhwa Seon at theend of Jeolyo (『法集別行錄節要幷入私記』) and wrote Ganhwagyeoruiron (『看話決疑論』).
Ganhwa Seon was passed down from Jingak Hyesim(眞覺 慧諶, 1178-1234), the most eminent disciple of Jinul, and the three leading monks of the late Goryeo period(麗末 三師), i.e. Taego Bou(太古普愚, 1301～1382) and Naong Hyegeun(懶翁 慧勤, 1320～1376), Baegun Gyeonghan(白雲 景閑, 1298∼1374) to Cheongheo Hyujeong(淸虛 休靜, 1520～1604) of the Choseon period. Nowaday Korean Ganhwa Seon was constructed by Baekpa Geungseon(白坡 亘璇, 1767～1852) of the late Choseon period who theoretically integrated.
Under the influence of Baekpa Geungseon, Gyeongheo(鏡虛) opened the door to the modern Ganhwa Seon, and impacted on the thought of Seon master Gyeongbong(鏡峰).
Seon master Gyeongbong(鏡峰), inherited the Sudden enlightenment and gradual cultivation(頓悟漸修) of Bojo Jinul, revitalized hwadhu practice(話頭) and leaded many monks and laity to the enlightenment. Gyeongbong(鏡峰) was brought in the renaissance of a new era of Ganhwa Seon, which is the representative Buddhist practice system widely in use today. |
