| 抄録 | 이 논문은 간화선이 시각문의 수행 구조를 취한다는 것을 근거로 하는 수행 모델을 제시한다. 이는 본각문인 조사선 수행 모델에서 유래된 것이다. 중국선의 수증론적 구조를 이와 같이 개념화 하는 것은 중국선 수행 전통을 통일된 관점으로 조망할 뿐 아니라 보다 넓은 안목으로 이해할 수 있게 한다. 이러한 개념틀을 이용하여 우리는 대혜종고의 깨달음 체험 사례를 분석할 것이다. 여기에는 깨달음에 이르는 중요 요인을 파악하고, 여러 요인들이 어떤 관련을 맺고 있으며, 이러한 요인들이 계기적으로 다른 국면에 따라 어떻게 변화하는지를 살펴 볼 것이다. 이것은 대혜 자신의 말로 기술된 그의 깨달음의 체험에 대한 상세하고 체계적인 분석을 제시하며, 특히 그의 대작이라 할 수 있는 『대혜어록(大慧語錄)』에서 나타난 세 번의 주요한 깨달음의 계기에 초점을 두어 분석한 것이다. 여기서는 단순히 연대기적 순서에 따라 세 가지 깨달음의 사례를 기술하는 것보다, 그의 목적을 달성하는 가운데 직면하는 장벽과 동인(動因)의 동태적인 과정을 부각시키고, 수행의 완성 과정에서 보이는 근본 원리와 두드러진 특징들을 발견한다. 각각의 사례는 대혜와 그의 스승들 사이의 관계에 초점을 두어 제시될 뿐 아니라, 믿음, 내면적 장벽과 의심의 역할에 특별히 주의를 기울이며, 또한 의심의 세 가지 차원 즉 근본적 의심, 실존적 의심, 방법론적 의심 등이 각각의 깨달음의 사례에 관련하여 논의될 것이다. 이러한 분석에 앞서, 이 논문은 먼저 선수행의 이상(二相) 모델을 설정하고, 그 모델의 핵심 요소들을 논의함과 아울러 이를 확장하여 간화선 수행의 삼상(三相) 모델을 제시하며, 간화선을 이 모델의 맥락에서 살펴볼 것이다. 끝으로 선수행의 핵심 이슈인 간화삼요와 돈점 논쟁에 대한 시사점을 간략히 언급할 것이다.
In this paper, we present Kanhua Chan as the Three-phase Model of Chan praxis. It hinges upon the idea that Kanhua Chan takes an actualizing enlightenment-based approach derived from an original enlightenment-based approach of Patriarchal Chan, the Two-phase Model of Chan praxis. This way of formulating the soteriological structure of Chinese Chan depicts the landscape of Chan praxis traditions in perspective so that it can be understood in the context of a broader view. With this framework, we analyze the three cases of Dahui’s enlightenment experiences to investigate what elements arise as an important factor, how they are related, and how different phases evolve out of inner dynamics in the entire process of Dahui’s Chan praxis. Since it is beyond the scope of this paper to present a coherent explication of all these in the context of two models of Chan praxis, we offer some salient features of our analysis. For the purpose of this paper, we provide a detailed, systematic analysis of Dahui Zonggao’s enlightenment experiences expounded directly in his own words, with a special focus on three major moments of enlightenment selected from his magnum opus, Dahui yulu 大慧語錄. Rather than merely describing the three cases in a chronological manner, the paper highlights the dynamics of the process of obstructing and propelling his objectives and discovers fundamental principles and salient features in perfecting his praxis. Each case is presented with a focus on the relationship between Dahui and his teachers leading to his enlightenment. Furthermore, a special focus is on the role of faith, inner obstacles and doubt, and three dimensions of doubt ─ fundamental, existential and methodological ─ are discussed with respect to each case of Dahui’s enlightenment. Prior to our main analysis, the paper proceeds with the two-phase model of Chan praxis, discusses key features of the model which is then extended to the three-phase model of Kanhua Chan praxis, and views Kanhua Chan in thecontext of this model. The paper offers a brief discussion on some implications for Kanhua three essentials and the sudden-gradual issue.
