| 抄録 | 부파불교 전적에서는 염불삼매와 선정계위가 결부되어 설명되는 전거를 찾을 수 없다. 상좌부 불교전통의 대표적인 논서인 Visuddhimagga에서 염불은 본선정[本三昧]으로 나아갈 수 없다고까지 한다. 염불선정은 초선 이전의 근접삼매(近接三昧 : upacāra samādhi)에만 가능하고 본삼매(本三昧 : appanā samādhi)에는 이르지 못한다고 한다. 그러나 대승불교의 염불은 붓다의 근본선인 구차제정의 기본인 사선에서 사무색 등에 이르기까지 염불삼매가 가능하다고 한다. 극히 예외적인 경우로 근현대 한국불교사에 있어 금타화상과 청화선사도 대승경전과 마찬가지로 구차제정의 염불선정을 설한다. 하지만 현재까지 이러한 대승불교 경전에서 초선 이후의 선정계위로 염불삼매가 설해지는 전거를 밝히지 못하고 있다. 전통종학이나 현대불교학에서조차 이점은 전적으로 간과되어 왔다. 이러한 점에서 본고는 처음으로 염불삼매를 사선 등의 선정 계위로 설하는 대승경론의 전거를 제시하고 있다. 본고가 밝히는 염불삼매와 선정 계위에 관한 대승경전은 다음과 같다. 먼저 구차제정 가운데 사선에 대한 분명한 전거는 『불장경』이다. 이 경은 제이선 이상에 해당하는 무심무사(無尋無伺)의 염불의 선정계위와 함께 사선이 직접 언급된다. 다음으로『십주비바사론』과 『오문선경요용법』, 『대방등대집경』그리고 『불설보살내계경』에서도 사선의 염불 선정계위가 시설된다. 그렇지만 『십주비바사론』에서는 색계사선과 무색계의 사무색정 등의 구차제정을 넘어선 누진명(漏盡明)에 이르는 계위를 보여준다. 따라서 현재로선 대승경론 가운데 『십주비바사론』의 염불 삼매가 구차제정의 선정계위와 관련하여 가장 완벽한 선정 계위를 보여준다고 할 수 있다. 이처럼 본 연구는 대승불교의 염불관과 대승 이전의 부파불교와는 크게 대비된다는 점을 경전적 근거로 밝히고 있다. 이는 불교교리사나 학계에서조차도 제대로 주목하지 못한 점을 밝히고 있는 것이다. 불교교리사에서 대승경전에 이르러 염불삼매가 초선 등의 구차제정의 선정계위가 설해지고 있다는 전거 제시는 대단히 귀중하며 획기적이다. 이를 계기로 앞으로 더욱 폭넓게 염불삼매와 선정계위에 관한 연구가 전개될 것이다.
Textual Sources regarding the Meditative Stages of Buddhānussati in Mahāyāna Buddhism Textual sources regarding the meditative stages of Buddhānussati (Buddha recollection) cannot be found in Sectarian Buddhism literature. In Visuddhimagga, the representative text of Theravada Buddhism, Buddhānussati is said to be unable to advance to attainment concentration (appanā samādhi), which takes place before the first meditative absorption, but is able to be reach preparatory concentration (parikamma samādhi).
Mahayana Buddhism, however, contends that Buddhānussati is more possible than the first meditative absorption. Furthermore, Mahayana Buddhists proclaim that it is possible to advance from the four meditative absorptions to non-material meditative absorption in the nine gradual meditations. However, no one has been able to ascertain this fact through Mahayana texts. Even in modern Buddhism, the benefits of Buddhānussati have been totally overlooked. In that regard, this paper relies on textual sources of Mahayana Buddhism to establish that Buddhānussati is possible in the nine gradual meditations. First of all, Buddhapiţakaduśīlanirgraha Sūtra is related to the four meditative absorptions of Buddhānussati as spoken of directly by this scripture. Furthermore, the four meditative absorptions can also be found in the scriptures of Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā-śāstra as well as other scriptures of Mahayana Buddhism. The Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā-śāstra text is among the most important because it refers to the nine gradual meditations of Buddhānussati. Here we go beyond the nine gradual meditations to the ultimate stage of Buddhānussati. In the present examination of the Mahayana texts, Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā-śāstra is the most perfect doctrine on the meditative stage of Buddhānussati. Thus, this study proves that Buddhānussati between Mahayana and Sectarian Buddhism differs greatly based on textual sources. This point has not yet been revealed in the field of Buddhist studies and religious history; therefore, presentation of these textual sources is precious and very important. Further research on Buddhānussati and the stages of meditation is expected in the future.
