| 抄録 | 김해 초선대 불족적은 오랫동안 거인의 발자국으로 잊혀져 있다가 가야불교에 대한 관심과 함께 새롭게 주목받고 있다. 움푹 패인 발자국 모양의 음각이란 불족적의 특성상, 이 불족적의 시기와 전례 그리고 진위를 확인하기란 쉽지 않다. 물론 역사적으로 실존했던 붓다는 인도 동부지역에 수없이 많은 발자국들을 남겼지만, 지금은 그 어느 것도 남아있지 않다. 역설적으로 불교의 역사를 되돌아보면 수없이 많은 불족적들이 불교가 전파된 스리랑카와 동남아시아에서 새롭게 발견되어 왔고 새롭게 만들어져 왔다. 불족적의 진위 여부를 떠나서 불족적의 존재는 불교가 전파된 곳의 불자들과 붓다를 직접적으로 연결시켜 주었고, 붓다의 부재 속에서도 마치 붓다가 있는 듯이 불교에 귀의할 수 있는 불교적 봉헌의 대상이 됐다. 이 논문에서는 고려 후기로 판명된 김해 초선대 마애불을 전재로 다양한 불족들의 이동과 역사를 비교하면서 김해 초선대 불족적의 성격과 의미를 분석해본다.
There is a rare Buddhapada at Chosundae at Gimhae. It has long been forgotten as the footprint of a giant but is nowadays attracting new attention along with interests in Gaya Buddhism. It is not easy to ascertain the time, precedent, and authenticity of the engraving in the shape of a hollow footprint due to the nature of Buddhapada. Of course, the historical Buddha left countless footprints in eastern India, but none of them are left now. Instead, countless Buddha footprints have been newly discovered and created in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia when Buddhism was transmitted there. Regardless of the authenticity of Buddha footprints quite apart from Eastern India, the existence of Buddha footprints can link local lay Buddhists directly to the historical Buddha himself. It means that even in the absence of Buddha local lay Buddhists can pay homage to the Buddha, as if they are in front of the Buddha in their homeland. Thus, it becomes one of the most important Buddhist objects of veneration in Southeast Asian Buddhism. In this paper, I am discussing the characteristics and meanings of Gimhae Chosundea Buddhapada by comparing it with various Buddhapadas in India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia in terms of their history and location.
