| 抄録 | 본 연구는 보조사상연구원이 개원한 1987년 이후의 보조지눌의 사상과 수선사에 대한 역사학계의 연구 성과를 정리하여 지난 30여 년간 학계에서 축적된 성과물의 의미와 한계를 살펴보고 이를 바탕으로 향후 역사학에서의 보조사상 및 수선사 연구를 전망하기 위한 것이다. 1980년대 후반 보조사상과 수선사에 대한 역사학계의 연구는 보조사상연구원 초기의 연구 성과에 힘입은 바가 크다. 지눌과 정혜결사 문제에 천착한 당시의 연구는 현재도 관련문제에 대한 역사학계의 전체적인 시각과 틀로써 기능하고 있다. 또한 이때의 연구는 이후 한국불교사에서 무신집권기의 결사불교를 주목하며 적극적으로 평가하게 된 계기도 되었다. 이후 지눌의 사상과 수선결사에 대해 여러 주제에서 연구가 이루어졌는데, 지눌의 사상과 관련해서는 삼문체계의 이해, 경절문의 이해, 지눌의 저술(『염불요문』 『진심직설』 『간화결의론』)의 진위논쟁 등이 주목되었다. 이는 수선사 2세 혜심의 사상적 경향과도 관련이 있는 주제이다. 수선사의 발전과 관련해서는 수선사 2세 혜심과 최씨 정권과의 관계가 중요한 연구주제였다. 혜심과 최씨 정권의 관계는 무신집권기 수선사가 어떤 과정을 통해 불교계를 주도하게 되었는지의 문제와도 관련이 있으며, 결사불교 구성원의 사회적 성격, 사원경제의 문제와도 관련된 것이었다. 이처럼 지눌과 혜심 단계의 수선사에 대한 연구는 지난 30여 년 동안 활발하게 이루어졌지만, 혜심 이후 수선사의 변화에 대한 연구 성과는 상대적으로 부족한 편이다. 무엇보다도 사료가 부족한 것이 큰 원인이었다. 지난 30여 년 간의 연구를 통해 중요한 주제와 논쟁의 상당부분이 정리되었으나 아직도 여전히 많은 연구과제가 남아 있는 것도 사실이다. 새로운 자료의 발굴, 기존 사료들에 대한 재검토, 연구시각의 변화 등은 연구의 새 지평을 열 수 있는 방법이 될 것이다. 아울러 역사학계에서 보조사상과 결사불교를 전공하는 전문연구자가 배출될 수 있는 환경을 만드는 것이 현재 가장 중요하고 시급을 요하는 과제라고 생각된다.
This study examines the significance and limitations of the academic achievements on Suseon-sa(修禪社) which accumulated over 30 years, after the opening of Bojosasang Yeonguwon(普照思想硏究院), especially by the scholarship of Korean History. It was written to make a prospect for research of thought of Bojo and Suseon-sa in the future. The historical studies of the second half of the 1980s were largely attributed to the achievements of the early stage of the Bojosasang Yeonguwon. The series of studies at the time of Jinul(知訥) and Junghye association(定慧結社) were still functioning as a whole view and framework of the history academia. In addition, this study was actively evaluated by the Korean history of Buddhism after paying attention to the Buddhism of the Military ruling period(武臣執權期). Since then, there have been many studies on Jinul's thought and Suseon-sa very actively. However, after the Hyesim(慧諶)’s-the Second chief priest of Suseonsa-period, the research on the change of Suseon-sa are relatively insufficient. Above all, the lack of resource and historical record was a major cause. These lack of historical records come from the Anti-Monol Struggle(對蒙抗爭). The academia accumulated many important researches on Jinul and Suseon-sa during last 30 years. Through these studies various aspects of thoughts of Jinul and Hyesim and founding and change of Suseon-sa were revealed in detail. Most of all, studies and arguments on text of Jinul’s writings, such as Hwaeomnon jeoryo(華嚴論節要), Yeonbul yomun(念佛要門), Jinsim-Jikseol(眞心直說), and Ganhwa gyoulyeu lon(看話決疑論) were remarkable and still controversial. The discovery of new data, review of existing data, and changes in viewpoint of research will be a way to open up new horizons for research. At the same time, it is the most important and urgent task to create an environment where professional researchers majoring in Bojo thought and Buddhism of Associtation(結社佛敎) in history are able to grow.
