| 抄録 | 필자는 두 핵심 개념들인 통합주의와 종파주의를 사용하여 세 가지 종류의 통합주의/종파주의 패러다임을 만들었고, 광의의 측면에서 동아시아 불교를 그리고 협의의 측면에서 (근현대)한국불교를 현재까지 수편의 논문과 몇 권의 저서를 통해서 철학적으로 그리고 학문적으로 검토하였다. 첫째, 동아시아 불교의 교판을 전면적으로 분석할 때, 필자는 경전 또는 교리 해석학의 통합주의/종파주의 패러다임을 응용하였다. 둘째, 선불교와 교학불교의 관련성을 그리고 선불교의 종조론, 수증론과 법맥론을 분석할 때, 필자는 선교 통합주의/(임제)선 종파주의 패러다임을 사용하였다. 그리고 셋째, 인도불교의 승단 분열은 정통실천(계율)의 해석의 차이에 기인하였다고 주장하는 폴 윌리엄스의 주장을 원용하여, 필자는 현대 한국불교의 교단 분열 과정을 비구승 종파주의/비구·대처승 통합주의 패러다임을 통해 면밀히 분석하였다. 필자는 본 논문에서 둘째와 셋째의 패러다임을 광범위하게 원용하였다. 정화불교운동(1954-1962) 기간 동안, 비구승 그룹은 선교 통합주의/임제선 종파주의 패러다임을 이용하여 종단의 헤게모니를 쟁취하기 위해서 본인들의 종조론과 법맥론을, 그리고 대처승 그룹은 종단의 헤게모니를 유지 존속하기 위해서 본인들의 종조론과 법맥론을 작의적으로 그리고 정치적으로 만들었다. 비구승 종파주의 운동인 정화불교운동의 성공으로 말미암아, 대처승 그룹은 비구승 그룹과 대처승 그룹이 공주(共住)하는 조계종에서 분종하여 태고종을 만들었다. 조계종과 태고종의 분종은 한국불교사에서 정통실천(계율)의 해석의 차이로 생겨난 최초의 승단 분열이었다. 필자는 본 논문에서 조계종 종헌의 개정 과정을 상세히 그리고 구체적으로 검토하여 종조론과 법맥론의 측면에서 정화불교운동의 과정을 학술적으로 그리고 철학적으로 논의하였다.
I established three paradigms of ecumenism and sectarianism and philosophically and academically analyzed East Asian Buddhism in general and Korean Buddhism in particular in my published books and articles. First, when I comprehensively examined doctrinal classification systems in Sino-Korean Buddhism, I hermeneutically utilized the first paradigm and grouped them into two, ecumenical and sectarian. Second, when I reviewed relations between Chan and doctrinal Buddhism, Chan soteriology and the Dharma lineages, I vertically and/or horizontally used the second paradigm of ecumenism and Linji Chan sectarianism. Third, referring to Paul Williams who argued that the split of monastic community in Indian Buddhism basically originated depending upon their different interpretation of orthopraxy (vinaya), I investigated the partition of ecumenical monastic order into two sectarian orders, the Jogye Order of unmarried monks and the Taego Order of married monks, in modern Korean Buddhism. I extensively applied the second and third paradigms and analyzed Purification Buddhist Movement, 1954-1962, in this article. In the development of Purification Buddhist Movement, while celibate monks theoretically utilized their paradigm of ecumenism and Linji Chan sectarianism and arbitrarily and politically expounded their versions of the order's founding patriarchs and thier Dharma lineaged in order to take the order's hegemony from their counterparts, married monks used thier paradigm and politically and arbitㄱarily explained thieir versions of the order's founding patriarchs and their Dharma lineages in order to maintain thier established hegemony in the order. Because of the success of sectarian Purification Buddhist Movement by celibate monks, married monks divided a united order and founded thier sectarian Taego Order for themselves. The division of ecumenical order into two orders was the first split of monastic order throughout Korean Buddhism based on their different interpretion of orthopraxy. I concretively reviewed the order's first and revised constitutions and academically and philosophically examined the order's founding patriarchs and thier Dharma Lineages in the movenent's process in this article. |
