The present article aims to refute the so-called Two path theory(TPT), focusing on the Kosambī-sutta, the Cunda-sutta, and the Susīma-sutta. TPT is a theory based on the vague assumption that there might be some conflict between meditating monks (jhyāyin bhikkhū) and scholar monks (dhammayoga bhikkhū) since the beginning of the Buddhism. Scholars who support this hypothesis often have cited the Kosambī-sutta, the Cunda-sutta, and the Susīma-sutta as textual evidence. Musīla and Nārada, the key figures of the Kosambī-sutta, do not represent a meditating monk and a scholar monk respectively but a learner (sekha) and a not-learner (asekha) because Musīla touches nibbāna while Nārada does not. The same interpretation should be applied to the Cunda-sutta in such a way that a meditating monk is a not-learner, while a scholar monk is a learner. Likewise, the Susīma-sutta does not support the idea that Nibbāna can be achieved only by intellectual approach but that intellectual and practical approaches are essential for attaining Nibbāna. It is pointless to discuss which of them is the priority in Buddhism for the doctrine (pariyatti) and practice (paṭipatti) are two wings of Buddhism. |
