This paper examines the major topic of discussion in Indian Philosophy, which is the argument around if the Veda has an author or not. The absence of the Veda``s author has created a prolonged disagreement about the Veda``s final message or where it has originated. Not only between the traditional schools that acknowledges the Veda``s authority and non-traditional schools, but also even within the traditional schools, there are difference in opinion about this topic. First of all, among the members of the traditional schools that acknowledges the Veda``s authority, Mimamsa and Vedanta that base their argument within the text of the Veda, views the Veda-the target of their interpretation-as the existing element of truth that is not artificial writing of humans or gods. On the other hand, Nyaya-Vaisesika, Samkhya, and Yoga schools that are member of traditional school but base their argument on independent grounds, claim that there is no literature without an author. The early Nyaya School called the original author of the Veda as the ancient saint who possessed a special ability to directly perceive imperceptive reality. The later Nyaya and Vaisesika school regarded it as having originated from god(isvara). Since the non-traditional schools were in a position of denying the Veda``s authority, the issue of verifying the authority was not important from the beginning and the issue surrounding the principal agent of authority was regarded with different assumptions. The author introduces the difference in opinion among the schools that engaged in this discussion, describes especially the three different arguments in detail and examines the similarities and differences between the Veda and the Buddhist scriptures. |
