ノート | Jinah Kim, PhD (UC Berkeley, 2006), teaches South and Southeast Asian art history at Harvard University. She is the author of Receptacle of the Sacred: Illustrated Manuscripts and the Buddhist Book Cult in South Asia (University of California Press, 2013). She is currently working on a book on the history of Indian manuscript painting between 1100–1500 and its relationship to the development of Tantric vision practices. Her other research projects examine the sociopolitical history of religious iconography in South and Southeast Asia and the development of the visual vernaculars in the South Asian subcontinent. |
抄録 | This essay examines the iconographic and compositional context in which the images of donors appear in stone stelae prepared in the ninth through the twelfth century, the heyday of Indian Esoteric (Tantric) Buddhism. When read together with the accompanying inscriptions, the manner in which human donor figures are represented reiterates a maṇḍalaic, hierarchical worldview and reinforces established social relations of the lived world. Taking the observation of behaviors carved on stone as a starting point for understanding performative aspects of otherwise motionless sculptures, this study suggests that specific design strategies seen in elaboration of decorative and architectural framing devices in late Buddhist images helped shape the vision practices of Indian Esoteric Buddhism described in many sādhana (lit. conjuring up a deity, adoration) texts. |
