ノート | The Count Raniero Gnoli (1930 - ) is an Italian Orientalist, Indologist and historian of religion. |
抄録 | The paper consists of the first critical edition of the Sekoddeśaṭippaṇī by Sādhuputra Śrīdharānanda, one of the three commentaries on the Sekoddeśa that have been preserved in Sanskrit. The texts of the other two works — the Paramārthasaṇgraha by Nāropā and the anonymous Sekoddeśapañjikā — have already been published, in India (M.E. Carelli, GOS, Baroda, 1941) and Japan (Annual of the Institute for Comprehensive Studies of Buddhism, Taisho University 1994) respectively. The Paramārthasaṃgraha in particular, was recently translated into Italian (R. Gnoli, G. Orofino, Nāropā, Iniziazione, Biblioteca Orientale 1, Adelphi, Milano 1994) and a new edition of its Sanskrit text is forthcoming in the SOR.
This edition of the Sekoddeśaṭippaṇī is based on the only extant manuscript of this work, a palm-leaf manuscript which is preserved in the Library of the Asiatic Society of Bengal (N. G. 10744), and the Tibetan translation that was done in the XV century by Vanaratna (Nags-kyi rin-chen) and Gshon-nu dpal.
Raviśrījñāna and Tibetan authors (Bu-ston, Tsong-kha-pa, 'Gos lo-tsā-ba gzhon-nu-dpal, Padma-dkra-po) inform us that Sādhuputra Śrīdharānanda was a direct disciple of Anupamarakṣita, one of the most famous teachers of the ṣaḍangayoga according to the Kālacakra doctrines.
A part from the Sekoddeśaṭippaṇī, Sāhuputra wrote two other works, namely, the Śrīkālacakrasādhana and the Śrikālacakramaṇḍalavidhi, which are preserved in the Tibetan translations. His commentary on the Sekoddeśa does not show any influence of Nāropā's teaching, but like the Sekoddeśapañjikā, which is a summary of the Paramārthasaṃgraha, does not gloss those stanzas in which sexual practises are treated (see, for instance, stt. 15-23, 78 etc.).
The text of the Sekoddeśa is not present in the MS of the Sekoddeśaṭippaṇī. It has been inserted in order to help the reader. In comparison with the text I published in 1994 (SOR, vol. 72, pp. 127-151) it presents a few emendations (see, in particular, stt. 1, 52, 125, 128).
In the next number of the RSO the translation of this work will be published. |
