| 抄録 | 본 논문에서는 학월 경산의 삶을 ‘지계(持戒)’에 초점을 두고 고찰하였다. 경산은 일제강점기와 불교정화운동 등 불교계 내외가 극심한 혼란에 처해 있을 때 네 번씩이나 총무원장으로 선출되며 종단의 지도자로 활동하였다. 혼란스러운 시대 상황에서도 중심을잃지 않고 지계를 통해 한국불교의 안정과 발전을 도모하였다. 그는 계율이야말로 선과교를 안착시키는 기반이며, 교단을 지탱하는 한국불교 발전의 원동력이라는 강한 신념을 갖고 있었다. 이러한 입장은 그가 젊은 날 경험했던 한국불교의 상황과 이를 계율의수지를 통해 극복하고자 했던 당대의 고승들로부터 받은 영향이 클 것으로 추정된다. 그는 『범망경』에서 설하는 심지계를 자성·불성을 개발하기 위한 수단이자 궁극적으로수행을 완성하여 깨달음에 이르게 하는 것으로 중시하는 한편, 구족계나 청규, 그리고염불 수행을 통한 신구의의 청정 수행에 이르기까지 폭넓게 지계행에 관심을 갖고 수지하였다. 지도자로서는 구성원의 화합과 자율을 강조하였다. 지계를 바탕으로 승가가 자율적으로 운영되며, 세간의 법정에서 다투지 않고 승가의 구성원이 서로 의견을 조율하며 화합하는 불국토를 만드는 것이 경산이 궁극적으로 지향한 정화의 완성이었다.
In this article, Hagwŏl Kyŏngsan’s life was considered with a focus on the ‘discipline’. Kyŏngsan was elected as the executive chief four times during times of extreme chaos inside and outside the Buddhist community during the Japanese colonial period and the Buddhist purification movement, and served as the leader of the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order. He had a strong belief that precepts are the foundation on which Zen(禪) and Teaching(敎) are established, and that they are the driving force behind the development of Korean Buddhism that supports the denomination. This position is presumed to be greatly influenced by the situation of Korean Buddhism that he experienced in his youth and the high priests of the time who tried to overcome it through the balance of the precepts. He places great importance on the spiritual realm preached in Brahmāʼs Net Sūtra as a means for developing self-nature and Buddha-nature and ultimately leading to enlightenment by completing the practice. As a leader, he emphasized the harmony and autonomy of the members. Kyŏngsan’s ultimate goal of purification was to create a Buddhist land where the monks operate autonomously based on the discipline, and the members of the monks coordinate their opinions and harmonize with each other without arguing in the courts of the world. |
