抄録 | This paper examines the uses, procedures, and promised efficacy of do-it-yourself dhāraṇī kits sold at Buddhist Supply Stores (Pulgyo yongp’um 佛敎用品) in South Korea. The use of these kits, typically sold for 3,000 Korean won (approx. US$2.30), is part of a larger socio-religious phenomenon in the twenty-first century: a revival of the popularity of dhāraṇī in Korean Buddhism and society. The kits are self-contained and supply all the materials necessary for the performance of the specific dhāraṇī. The outlined methods are simple and straightforward, promising success. The procedures, which often include the burning and ingestion of talismans, bear similarities to practices in Chinese Daoism, besides connections with folk religious practices shared throughout East Asia. |
