抄録 | In the canon of the Theravādins the recipients of donations are either the Saṅgha or individuals – monastics as well as non-monastics. In the layer of the Aṭṭhakathā commentaries in addition a vihāra (“monastery”), a cetiya (“shrine”), and navakamma (“restoration work”) are mentioned. Their introduction mainly serves the purpose of enabling monastics to navigate certain rules relating to the economic activity of the Saṅgha, primarily to accept objects not allowed (akappiya) to the monastics. Among these three recipients the vihāra became the most prominent showing that fully developed monasteries with monastic communities residing in them for quite long periods had by then become so prominent that they could function as legal substitute for the Buddhist Saṅgha. |
