| 抄録 | The Buddhist Retreat Centre (BRC), near the town of Ixopo in Kwazulu-Natal Province,South Africa, was established in 1980 and has been at the centre of the South African Buddhist community ever since. In Buddhist circles, it is often referred to in an affectionate way as "the kindergarten", and most other Buddhist establishments in the country can directly or indirectly trace their roots to it. This article traces the history and governance structures of the Centre and shows the role that the BRC plays in terms of Baumann's theoretical approach to the development of Western Buddhism. Social upliftment and ecological work have also featured largely among the BRC's activities. For now, Buddhism in South Africa remains largely a white phenomenon, but there are signs that this may change as the middle-class audience to which it appeals changes in composition. |
